SYRIAN MANDATE
FRANCE MAY GET RID OF IT. BARGAIN WITH ITALY SOUGHT. (Rec. .10 p.m.) London, October 27. The possibility of a bargain between France and Italy concerning Syria is discussed by the Daily Telegraph’s diplomatic correspondent who says, “French Ministers now are either anxious or resigned to the idea of returning the mandate to the League if they can do so without loss of prestige. Moreover, they might acquiesce in the choice of Italy as the new mandatory if Italy, among other considerations, is willing to abandon her aspirations in Tangier. There is no doubt that progress has been achieved in the course of the preliminary soundings. The Italians contend they would succeed in Syria where France failed by leaning upon the Arab, Moslem and Christian elements instead of relying upon a Turkish minority.—A. and N.Z.
