DESTRUCTIVE BLAZE
FIRE AT METHVEN. SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES. (Per United Press Association.) Ashburton, October 15. A fire at Methven this morning destroyed the premises occupied by M. A. Stone, tobacconist and mercer and billiard saloon proprietor, and J. F. Stone, secretary of the Racing and Trotting Clubs, A. and P. Association and Dairy Co. All the ‘contents were lost except J. F. Stone’s books and safe. The premises were owned by Mrs J. H. Stone and portion was burned last year, the present fire completing the destruction. The door of the billiard saloon, which was locked last night, was found open when the alarm was given and burglary is suspected. Insurances: M. A. Stone, stock and billiard tables, £1250 and building £lOOO. Stone estimates his loss at £lOOO above the insurance.
