N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIP DR. ROSS HEADS LIST EXCELLENT PLAYING CONDITIONS (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, October 15. Perfect weather conditions prevailed for the opening of the 30th annual New Zealand golf championship meeting at the Miramar links to-day. There was a full complement of entries, 80, and as this includes several prominent Australian golfers including Hector Morrison, amateur champion of New South Wales, additional interest is added to the meeting. With a few exceptions all the leading amateurs of New Zealand are competing and there is a full list from the professionals’ ranks. The playing condition of the course is excellent and reflects considerable credit on the Miramar Club, and justifies Miramar being included in the exclusive list of championship courses. The playing conditions were excellent, a good fight, while there was a gentle southerly breeze. Consequently some good cards were returned. The result of to-day’s play leaves Dr Ross, of Dunedin, in the lead for the open championship by 3 strokes.

To-day’s play places Dr. Ken Ross, of Dunedin at the head of the list, a position well deserved by his two rounds of 74, each of very fine golf. A. G. Sime never looked like being far behind. He put up excellent golf generally. His putting was deadly accurate. W. R. Dobson, of Concord, Sydney, repeated the golf he produced when he won the Canterbury amateur championship at the Easter tourney of the Christchurch Golf Club. The hero of many championships, Arthur Duncan, is well up and played two consistent rounds. E. J. Moss missed putts in the morning round and spoiled his afternoon round by taking two 6’s to finish. T. H. Horton obviously played too carefully in the morning, but improved in the afternoon, and but for striking trouble at the 9th he might easily have reduced 2 strokes. A. J. Shaw spoiled his chance of an excellent morning round by taking a 6 and a 5 at the first two holes and also a 7 at the seventh. Kapi Tareha played two good rounds, a blemish in the morning round being a 7 at No. 1. In the afternoon his putting was sensational, bv holing five successive threes at 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14. E. M. MacFarlane did not appear to let himself out in the morning, returning an 80. However, in the afternoon he improved and with two holes to play he wanted 5 and 4 for 72. At the 17th he had the makings of a 4, but the ball lying in a cavity on the green jumped when he putt (an easy distance), and he took 5. At the 18th he struck trouble after a good drive. The ball lay so that an iron club was necessary. He unfortunately sliced and the hole cost him 7. H. J. Shanks and L. Seifert both owe their position to two rounds of steady play. Hector Morrison, as expected, is well up and but for taking 7 at No. 3 and 6 at No. 7 in the morning, and also taking 8 at No. 7 in the afternoon, would have been further up. Goss played well in the morning round, excepting two 7’s. H. R. Blair slipped 5 putts in the morning round. J. Mclntosh was all astray in the morning in direction and distance J. C. Bidwill did not produce his Wanganui form. To-day’s best, card was: Dr Ross—Morning:—Out 5,4, 7,3, 4,3, 5,4, 5—40. In 4,4, 2,3, 4,4, 4, 5—34—74. Afternoon:—Out 5. 4,5, 4,4, 2,5, 4, 5—38. In 4,3, 4,4, 3,5, 4,5, To-morrow the third and fourth rounds of the open championships will be played and there should be some excellent golf, especially as there are indications of the weather remaining fine.
