TURBULENT MINORITY

REDS AT LABOUR CONFERENCE. COMMUNIST EJECTED AMID CONFUSION. London, October 14. The Moderates were kept busy at the Margate Labour Conference to-day in restraining the Reds and side-tracking their motions demanding the cancellation of the Treaty of Versailles and the Dawes Plan and the repudiation of the Treaty of Locarno as aimed against Russia, and advocating a workers’ alliance with Russia. The Reds were thwarted by the executive’s amendment, which was carried, urging the Ministry to re-open negotiations with L. B. Krassin (Soviet Commissioner of Foreign Trade), with a view to restoring political and economic relations with the Soviet. Some excitement was caused by Mr Bishop, a delegate whose credentials were cancelled because he was a Communist, demanding a hearing. Amidst angry cries, “Get out,” “Shove him out,” and threats of personal violence, finally Bishop quitted the conference and joined the crowd of spectators in the gallery.—A. & N.Z.
