APPEAL TO DOMINIONS. (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) London, October 14. An appeal to the dominions to maintain tariff preference is contained in a Federaiion of British Industries memorandum on *he eve of the Imperial Conference. It - vs- The desire of the dominions to develop industries is natural, but it should not prevent discrimination against foreigners. The tendency exists in some quarters to withdraw preference because Britain does not show preference for dominion products. It is forgotten that the dominions have a great advantage in other directions. For example, the Colonial Stock Act gives exceptional loan facilities. Also, Britain bears an overwhelming share of the general defence of the Empire.”—Sun Cable. GOVERNOR OF BENGAL HON. F. S. JACKSON APPOINTED. London, October 14. It is officially announced that the Hon. F S. Jackson, the cricketer, will be the new Governor of Bengal. He assumes office in March.—A. & N.Z. The Hon. F. S. "Jackson was born in 1870 and educated at Harrow and Trinity College. Cambridge, where he gained his B.A. He was Financial Secretary to the War Office in 1922 and 1923. He is a wellknown cricketer, having plaj-ed in the Harrow Eleven and being captain of the Cambridge Eleven in 1892-1893, when he also played for Yorkshire. He has repeatedly played for Gentlemen v. The Players and All England teams. He served in South Africa in 1900-02 and was a Captain in the 3rd Royal Lancashire Regiment. He has been chairman of the Unionist Party since March. 1923, and M.P. for the Howdenshire Division of Yorkshire since 1915.
