OTATAIU SHOW

A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. On Friday, October 8, the third annual i Spring show was held in the Otatara Hall with the double object of raising funds for the local school requirements and stimulating the already keen interest of the residents both young and old in the growth ' and study of flowers and vegetables and ' the culture of the arts such as needlework : and cookery. I The entries in the flower section, owing | to the prolonged inclemency of the weather and the lateness of the date of holding the show, were not as numerous as in previous I years but the quality of the blooms shown ! was excellent and the tables presented a | delightful picture. The entries in needlework and baking sections —owing to prevalent sickness, were also not so numerous as in the previous shows. The children’s section shows that the little ones are very keen to follow up this work which was one of the most pleasing features in the minds of those responsible for the organising of the show. The judges who had kindly consented to act were Mrs Simpson (needlework), Mrs W. Tait (cooking and sweets), Miss Frew, (children’s work) and Mr J. Lennie (flowers and vegetables). After the judging Mr John Lennie on behalf of the committee officially opened the show. He congratulated the people on the fine display of flowers over which he had spent quite a difficult time in allocating the respective awards. He said that he did not see why the Otatara show should not develop into quite a big one. At night the show was again opened to enable those people who were at work during the day to visit it and a few competitions were held. At 10.30 p.m. Mr T. Rewcastle auctioned all the flowers, vegetables and entries for cooking and the result was a very pleasing one, the school committee being handed the sum of £8 16/5 after all expenses were paid.
