WENDONSIDE

TENNIS CLUB OPENS. (From Our The Wendonside Tennis dub opened its season on October 2 under ideal weather conditions and judging by the enthusiasm displayed the club will have a prosperous year. A large crowd was present, visitors coming from Riversdale and Waikaia. The president, Mr W. Collins, formally declared the season opened. Those playing took sides under the leadership of the president and secretary, and a friendly match ensued. On Thursday evening, the 7th inst., a very successful hard times and fancy dress ball was held in the local hall under lhe auspices of the Tennis Club. The hall was comfortably filled, about fifty couples taking part. Much amusement was caused as the various original costumes appeared, some having gone to a considerable amount of trouble to conceal their identity. Prizes were awarded by popular vote for the mast original and best fancy dress, for both ladies and gentlemen. The ladies’ honours fell to Mrs W. Collins, dressed as a sundowner, and Miss E. Hinchey, Gore, as a red pierrette. Mr Jack Manson (Chinaman) and Mr C. Heenan (bride) won the gentlemen’s prizes. Music was supplied by Mr and Mrs Gilmour (violin and piano) ably assisted by Mr Ted Cronin (effects) and was all that could be desired. Extras were supplied by Miss Madge Thompson. The duties of M.C. were entrusted to Mr A. Maher and Mr K. Williamson. After a delectable supper Mr W.
