WINTON NOTES

TENNIS CLUB. (From Our Correspondent.) The annual meeting of the Winton Tennis Club was held in the school hall last Monday, about 30 members attending. The president (Dr Gow) was in the chair. The annual report stated that the past season had not been quite so successful as former ones, due in part to weather on match days and to the counter attraction of the Exhibition. Mrs W. D. Cowie, Miss Watson and Mr G. Lindsay represented Southland against Otago. Mr T. Walker was also selected, but was unable to play. The balance-sheet disclosed a credit of £3 19/8, which was very satisfactory, as during the year a debt of £32 5/9 had been liquidated. It was intended to topdress all the courts and improve the southern court. During the evening the trophies presented by the patron of the club (Mr P. de la Perrelle) were presented by the president, the recipients replying briefly. He also thanked Mr Perrelle for presenting the trophies and for his practical interest in the club. He also announced his intention to present engraved plates to the winners. The following office-bearers for the ensuing year* were elected:—Patron, Mr P. de la Perrelle; president, Dr P. Gow (reelected) ; vice-presidents, Mr T. Walker and Mr F. Tilley; secretary, Mr J. D. Cameron; treasurer, Mr C. F. Barham; auditor, Mr J. A. Broom; general committee—Vicepresidents, secretary, treasurer, Mesdames Tilley, Hamilton, Martin, O. Jamieson, Miss M. Watson, Messrs G. Lindsay, L. de la Perrelle; grounds committee—Messrs Lindsay, Slocombe and Cameron; delegates to centre —president, secretary, Messrs Walker and Smith. It was decided to hold the annual ball at an early date. The general committee are to arrange for the opening day. After the meeting a social hour was spent, the ladies providing supper, while Misses Moore and Kerse supplied the music for the dances. GIRL GUIDES. The committee of the Girl Guides met in the rest room on Friday afternoon. Mrs J. R. Hamilton presided in the absence of the president. The following ladies were present:—Mesdames J. P. McWilliam, Walsh, Lindsay, Brown, Gow, Nelson and Miss I. G. Russell. Accounts amounting to £l3 7/3 were passed for payment. The company is now practically fully equipped, and hopes to have Mrs C. de R. Andrews, District Commissioner, out to enrol the. Guides towards the end of October. To raise funds it was decided to have a street stall in November. The movement has taken a firm hold and the company is making steady progress. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. Owing to the unfavourable weather the Horticultural Society has had to postpone its Spring Show till October 1. With seasonable weather the society is hoping that the success of the show will in no way be affected, as many fine blooms are to be seen in the gardens of enthusiasts. In fact, the narcissi are this year especially fine and are a delight to the eye. COMPETITIONS SOCIETY. Mr T. Walker presided over a meeting of the Competitions Society on Friday evening when routine business arising out of the recent festival was disposed of. Votes of thanks were passed to the president and all those who had assisted at the festival. Several suggestions for next year’s festival were noted. The treasurer (Mr J. S. Nelson) presented the balance-sheet for the festival. This disclosed a credit balance of £2 4/8. There were, however, other obligations to be met and the result of the year’s operations would show a loss of about £lO. This was due partly to unforeseen circumstances and the society had every reason to be satisfied with the public support of this year’s festival as the door takings were in excess of those of last year. 1 SUMMER SPORTS. Sunny days are turning thoughts to summer sports. The bowlers are busy putting their green in order, and it is looking extremely well, thanks to the energetic efforts of the president and a band of willing workers. The cricketers have opened up their wickets and are getting ready for action. Devotees of the sport of Izaak Walton are busy furbishing their gear. A week of fine weather should put the ‘streams in fine order for October 1.
