TRADE IN INDIA

EFFECT OF RIOTS. MERCHANTS SUFFER HEAVY LOSSES. (Rec. 11.5 p.m.) Delhi, Aug. 2. Resulting from the heavy loss of piece goods the merchants of Calcutta have sustained through repeated communal riots the Marwari Chamber of Commerce, the most influential body of Indian traders, requested members not to place forward contracts for foreign piece goods for defined periods. The effect will be that there will be no piece goods trade with Manchester for four months, and the normal imports amounting to £26,000,000 per year will be reduced by one-third.—A. & N.Z.
