RADIO INSPECTORS

DUTIES OF ASSISTANTS. STATEMENT BY SECRETARY OF G.P.O. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, June 17. An official statement has been made by the secretary of the G.P.O. in connection with the controversy regarding the duties of four honorary inspectors who were selected to assist departmental radio inspectors in carrying out their duties. He states that these appointments were made at the request of radio societies. The Christchurch societies offered to delegate certain members to undertake any duties required of them by the district radio inspector. This offer was accepted and all other societies advised of what had been done. After a time the Wellington society informed the Department that they would co-operate in a similar way with the Christchurch society and nominated four members who were willing to undertake duties. The appointees were advised that they had been appointed honorary deputy radio inspectors under the direction of the Departmental radio inspector at Wellington and their duties would be to assist the Department in seeing that the provisions of the statute and regulations applying to radio receiving, amateur transmitting and receiving and experimental stations were observed. The secretary states that it will be observed that no reference is made to such matters as the right of entry or penalties for refusing to permit inspection by one of these honorary officers. It is quite correct that the regulations require all radio stations to be open for inspection at any time by any radio inspector, but it is also quite clear that the Minister’s powers may only be delegated to officers of the Post and Telegraph Department.
