A YOUTH’S LAPSE
CHARGE OF THEFT. ADMITTED TO PROBATION. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, June 16. A youth who stole money from his employers and handed it over to his mother for the payment of household accounts appeared before Mr H. A. Young, S.M., this, morning. He pleaded guilty to each of three charges of taking letters containing money, the total amount involved being £2 4/4. Chief Detective Gibson said that the youth, who was seventeen and a half, had delayed sending out accounts and had detained 70U letters that the police had discovered. The youth took money home and gave it to his mother, who paid tradesmen with it and in this way the notes were traced. The boy had since changed his employment. The firm for whom he was now working were willing to take him back. His family history was rather unfortunate. The Magistrate said that in the circumstances he intended to give accused another chance. He would be admitted to probation for two years and ordered to refund the money as the probation officer directed. On the recommendation of the probation officer he would make an order for the suppression of his mime.
