FOG BOUND
SYDNEY “UNDER COVER” FERRY SERVICES DISLOCATED SUBURBANITES STRANDED IN CITY. MINOR ACCIDENTS REPORTED. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) Sydney, June 16. The heaviest fog experienced for some years descended upon Sydney and the harbour during the night and within a few minutes it became so dense that all ferry services were disorganised, and with the exception of one or two, all trips from Circular Quay were cancelled. Hundreds of theatre-goers and other residents of the northern suburbs were stranded on the wharves waiting for the fog to lift, or for some venturesome master to take a boat out. The vehicle ferries also ceased running and motorists had to make a long detour to cross the harbour. Shortly after midnight the ferry for Milson’s Point, with 1,800 passengers, successfully made the trip. In the streets tram and vehicular traffic was impeded. The headlights of trams and motors could be picked out only a few yards away. About two in the morning the fog lifted for half an hour and then settled down again, but not so thick as earlier in the night. The range of visibility at daybreak was about 200 yards. A few minor accidents are reported, including a ferry steamer, which ran on a reef in Neutral Bay and damaged her rudder.—A. and N.Z.
