BLUFF NOTES

BITTING OF COURT, (From Our Correspondent.) At the Bluff Police Court yesterday, before Messrs G. R. George and R. Cruickshank, Justices of the Peace, John Harrison was charged with assaulting Alfred Walter Ernest Caldwell by pushing him and kicking him on the right thigh. Defendant pleaded “not guilty.” Mr J. G. Imlay appeared for complainant, who stated that he was in the employ of defendant and had occasion to go to the house of the latter on Sunday morning, where he had an argument with defendant's wife regarding a cow. Defendant came out and pushed him, besides kicking him on the thigh. He reported the matter to the police and consulted the doctor, He had said nothing to defendant to cause him to commit the assault. Constable White gave corroborative evidence. Defendant said that complainant had not attended to witness’s cow and had used abusive language to his wife. He admitted pushing complainant, but denied kicking him. The Court adjudged that defendant having admitted committing an assault would be fined £1 and 7/- costs, medical expenses 12/6 and solicitor’s fee £2 2/-, or in default one week’s imprisonment. Meetings of the Southland Anglican clergy will be held at Bluff to-day and to-morrow. At a service in St. Matthew’s Church this evening the preacher will be the Rev. G. A. Dawson, vicar of Wyndham. There will be Holy Qommunion on Friday at 7.30 a.m.
