CHILDREN’S HOUSE

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Children’s House and Free Kindergarten Association was held in the Gala street rooms on Monday. Present: Mrs Burwell (chairwoman), Mesdames P. Cruickshank, Strathearn, Pryde, Denton, Hanan, Campbell and Miss H. L. Birss. A report from the Gala street school stated that all the renovations were completed and the building had been much improved. There had been numerous visitors during the month, and all had expressed pleasure in watching the children. Most of the children had recovered from the recent attack of chicken-pox and the attendance was good. Several requisitions were asked for and granted. The South Invercargill School reported that the roll number was 56 and average attendance 41. Work was being carried on satisfactorily and the training of probationers for the new kindergarten shortly to be opened in Liddel street was being carried on. A social meeting of the parents of both kindergartens and members of the association had been arranged for Friday, 18th, by the parents of the South Invercargill Kindergarten. The fencing of the grounds was still in abeyance, owing to the adjoining properties being held by the Public Trust. Mrs Burwell reported that the Liddel Street Hall had been arranged for and that a good deal would have to be done before opening day. The arrangements for heating, cleaning, etc., were left in the hands of the president and secretary, and the tender of Mr Race for the erection of a new lavatory was accepted. In order to raise funds to meet the increased expenditure the committee resolved to hold a bring and buy sale at Liddel .Street on the last Wednesday in July.
