ASSAULT CHARGE

“A CASE FOR IMPRISONMENT ” BAD FEELING BETWEEN PARTIES. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, June 15. “This is a case for imprisonment,” said Mr H. A. Young, S.M., this morning in sentencing Thomas Grace to two months’ gaol for having committed an assault on Luther Moore. The informant stated that the offence took place two years ago. He was a secondhand dealer and Grace came to him with a tale about having a wife and starving children at home and witness gave him money. Subsequently witness found out that the woman accused was living with was not his wife. When witness asked accused why he had deceived him the reply he got was a black eye and a couple of teeth knocked out. The reason why witness had not gone on with the prosecution was because he had been unable to trace accused. Evidence was given to the effect that there had been bad feeling between the parties. The Magistrate then imposed a sentence of two months’ imprisonment.
