THE HALF-HOLIDAY

WEDNESDAY OR SATURDAY?' A QUESTION ANSWERED, A correspondent in yesterday morning’s issue of the Southland Times raised the question whether the action of shopkeepers in changing their half-holiday from Wednesday to Saturday was sanctioned by law. On inquiries being made at the Labour Department yesterday it was learned that they had every right to do so provided due notice was given to the inspector. An extract from the Shops and Offices Act, 1921, reads as follows: “Provided that in the event of any day other than Saturday being appointed as the statutory closing-day then any occupier shall be entitled to close his shop on Saturday in lieu thereof on giving to the inspector notice in writing of his intention to do so.”
