FIRE ON OPIHI

SEAT OF FIRE NOT YET REACHED. (Per United Press Association.) New Plymouth, June 14. A fire on the Opihi was discovered about 8 a.m. when the vessel was off Cape Egmont. Full speed was made for port. On arrival the vessel was berthed at the Moturoa wharf. The fire brigade was called, the hatches lifted and emergency gangs put on to discharge the cargo of 900 tons. Whitish smoke and the smell of roasted potatoes came from the hold apparently between hatches two and three on the starboard side. About one o’clock flames were seen issuing from some timber. The fire brigade turned a hose on and subdued them. The work of discharging proceeded interruptedly, but the actual seat of the fire has not yet been reached. The fire apparently originated in the Dunedin cargo, which included matches.
