BOWLS

ANNUAL MEETING. SOUTHLAND CLUB. The annual meeting of members of the Southland Bowling Club was held at the pavilion last evening. Mr T. Crawley, president, occupied the chair, there being about 34 members present. The adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet was moved by the president, who said that members must feel satisfied at the present sound position of the club. In dealing with the balance-sheet, which showed that the club had finished the year with practically the same credit balance as at the commencement, the chairman referred to the gift to the club of a motor mower by Mr W. Benzie. As president, he wished to voice the sincere thanks of the club to Mr Benzie for his valuable gift. Reference to the excellent work of Mr Benzie was also made by Mr J. H. Reed, who seconded the motion and said that he was certain that as a caretaker Mr Benzie was unsurpassed in the Dominion. The club was extremely fortunate in having his services and was under a deep debt of gratitude to him for his gift. At a later stage of the meeting Mr Reed handed Mr Benzie a handsome woollen rug as a token of appreciation by the members. The motion was carried without further comment. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows:—President, Mr J. C. Thomson; vice-president, Mr W. Mcßobie; secretary, Mr W. S. Ayson; treasurer, Mr D. H. Thomson; executive committee, Messrs J. H. Reed, D. J. Hewitt, R. D. Donaldson, W. Stewart and H. Holliman; selectors, Messrs R. D. Donaldson, D. H. Thomson and D. J. Hewitt; green ranger, Mr W. Mcßobie; auditor, Mr J. Stevenson; delegates to Southland Bowling Centre, Messrs D. H. Thomson and J. Brass. Mr Crawley moved that Messrs W. Benzie, W. Martin and Murray should be elected life members of the club. These gentlemen, he stated, had done a great deal of work on behalf of the club and the committee was unanimously of opinion that their services could only be suitably recognised in this manner. The motion was seconded by Mr A. M. Ayling and was carried. Mr Robert Erskine wrote, forwarding his resignation as a member. It was decided to ask Mr Erskine to reconsider his decision. Notice of motion was given by Mr J. Stevenson that no person should in future be elected a member of the club save at a special meeting or a general meeting called for that purpose. The mover said that in his opinion the present system of electing members was too haphazard and there was a possibility that undesirable persons might be elected.
