EXTENSIVE DAMAGE
BOARDINGHOUSE GUTTED. OCCUPANTS ESCAPE IN NIGHT ATTIRE. (Per United Press Association.) Marton, June 14. A fire early on Sunday morning gutted the Trocadero boardinghouse, an old twostoreyed wooden building at Marton Junction. Seventeen occupants escaped in their night attire unhurt except Patrick Fogarty, aged 30, a railway employee, who was severely burned on the legs, and W. J. Quinn, aged 42, a labourer, who sustained internal injuries through falling to the ground from the top storey. Both are progressing satisfactorily. The glare of the flames lit the country for miles around and hundreds gathered in the vicinity and saw the firemen’s futile efforts. Nothing was saved. The adjoining residence was saved though badly damaged. The boardinghouse was owned by Mrs Wunsch, of Palmerston North. The damage is estimated at £3,000.
