Mr D. A. Strachan left for the north by the second express on Saturday. Mr J. Fraser har decided to seek election as member of the Bluff Harbour Board at the forthcoming elect'ons. Messrs H. E. Niven and W. Clark have been nominated in connection with the forthcoming election of members to the Southland Hospital Boaro. In connection with the impending County Council elections, Mr James McNeil, vf Collingwood, has been nominated as a member for the Wallacetown Riding. Mr L. W. Spencer, manager of the local branch of the Union Steam Ship Company, is an expected arrival at Bluff by the Manuka, from Melbourne, on Wednesday. Advice has been received at Bluff that Sergeant Packer, who has been in charge of the police area there, has been transferred to Gore. During the short time he had in charge at Bluff Sergeant Packer \ has impressed the public as being a zealous officer and vigilant in the enforcement of law and order. His successor will be Sergeant Tonkinson, of Gore. A very old and well-known figure in New Zealand journalism died in Wellington on Saturday night in the person of the Hon. W. J. Geddis, M.L.C., aged 65 years. The deceased was for many years managing director of the New Zealand Times and the Napier Daily~Telegraph, and formerly part proprietor of the New Zealand Observer. Deceased was one of a party of New Zealand editors who made a tour of France during the war. He had been a member of the Legislative Council for about eight years, having been re-appointed last year on the expiration of his previous term. —Press Association.
