SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODRED. Riverton R.C. Easter entries due tonight. Canterbury J.Ca. general entries this evening. MaMerton R.C. Autumn meeting due tomorrow. Corn Money was easily beaten at Waimate races. Riverton R.C&. entries close at six o’clock this evening. New Brighton T.C. Autumn meeting concludes to-morrow. Father O’Flynn is to race at Ricearton at Easter time. Steeplechaser Carawock is now trained by F. Higgott at Otaki. S. Waddell is training a Paper Money half-aster to Gold Light. The jumping races at Riverton are expected to fill up this evening. In view of the fact that the Australian Jockey Club’s popular and important Autumn meeting is rapidly approaching it is interesting to read what a Sydnty Sun writer has to say of the preparations of three horses who will race at Randwick at Easter under weight-for-age or handicap conditions:—‘‘Windbag has once again come into his own, and he proved by equalling his own record for seven furlongs at Randwick this morning (March 10) that the weight-for-age aspirants at the forthcoming meeting will need to be at the very top cf their form—for Windbag will. His mission was seven furlongs on the tan, and he carried about Ist. Moving away at a smart gait he was immediately in his stride, and was accompanied by Bonne Qiose. Hie first furlong was run in 12j; two in 24, three in 36}. four in 48}, five in 1.1, six in 1.14 and the full distance in 127, which equals his record established in the spring. After travelling four furlongs Bonne Chose was eased off, and the champion was accompanied home by Cloud.—A sterling performance was scheduled by Golden Voice. Carrying a medium weight he sped over half a mile on the tan in 48. The Demosthenes gelding is in great heart, and revelled in his task—The New Zealander Runnymede is undoubtedly a high-class galloper. This morning was the first time since his arrival in Australia that he seriously tackled the watch, and he proved by defeating Vertumnus by ten lengths and accomplishing five in 1.14 that he is a class horse.” Writing on March 8 a Melbourne pressman remarks:—“Twenty-six pounds a minute is the rate of earning which George Young, the New Zealand jockey, established during the V.R.C. Autumn carnival which closed on Saturday. In four days he has worked jus: on a quarter of an hour, for which he has received a cheque for £390 14s. averaging £97 13s 6d daily. Young was the outstanding rider at the carnival. He had only six mounts, and was successful with each. Young first arrived in Sydney as the famous Gloaming’s pilot, and there were numbers of people who criticised his riding ability. There is a report in circulation that Mr C. Kellow, the owner of the Newmarket winner. Heroic, who profiled much over the winning double Heroic. Pilliewinkie, has presented Young who rode the latter, with a new 40 h.p. Minerva car, and a substantial cheque as well ” Writers in Otago and Canterbury have been commenting on some phases of the recent Southland Racing Club Autumn meeting, and, among other incidents, have been grappling with statements made as to the South Island Stipendiary Steward, Mr G. E. Curry, holding inquiries as to the riding of Los Ambus in the Flying and Winter Oats Handicap. On various sides Mr Curry is criticised for interfering and olamed to a greater or lesser extent. To the writer’s mind. T_r Curry would be justified in seeking to have the “riding out rule” enforced re?sonably in arv- case, but, as far as the Invercargill fixture goes, he does not appear to have taken any action until requested to do so from a source that could not well be overlooked bv a gentleman in his position. From information gleaned by the writer from other than official sources, but probably quite as authentic, it appears that the owner of Los Ambus was not satisfied that his horse had been ridden out when be finished fourth in the Flying Handicap. In justice to himself he asked for an official inquiry, but his request was not granted—a decision quite within ♦he nrovince of the stewards. Mr Cambridge then interviewed his rider in company with the stipendiary steward and expressed the opinion that F. Voight should have made use of his whip, a suggestion to which the jockey objected on the ground that Los Ambus galloped better without an application of the persuader. There was no feeling evinced on either side, the matter being discussed amicably. On the following day, it is alleged, on hearing that his jockey had not been instructed to use his whip on Los Ambus in the Winter Handicap, the horse’s owner remarked that he would like to give definite instructions in this direction, and an official of the club volunteered to get the horse and rider— Los Ambus had already cantered down in his preliminary—back to the birdcage to enable this to be done. The horse was duly brought back in the presence of the obliging official, the owner, and the trainer, but was at once ordered to the startingpost without the owner’s intentions being definitely expressed as he wished —a decision again within the meaning of the Rules of Racing, but one that might reasonably have been relaxed had the circumstances been more widely understood. Mr Curry was not present on this occasion and was nrobablv quite unaware of the incident. Under the circumstances set forth according to the writer’s knowledge, Mr Curry is being unjustlv criticised in various quarters for alleged “interference,” whereas his connection with the whole affair was very slight and perfectly in keeping with his position and duties as far as the happening after the race for the Flying Handicap on the opening day of the fixture was concerned.

Now that the full lists of weights for the Doncaster Handicap and Sydney Cup, to be decided at the A.J.C. Easter fixture have come to hand from Sydney, it will be gathered that the handicapper (Mr G. F. Wilson' did not exactly pitchfork the local representative, Listening Post, into either race. The top weight in the Doncaster Handicap Gm.) is Ton Gallant 10.7. followed by The Night Patrol 10.3, Heroic 10.2, Whittier 9.13, The Hawk 9.11, Herein o an a 9.7, Fuji San 9.7, Manfred 9.5, Pantheon 9.4, Red Gauntlet 9.3, Bairn 9.0, Mitillus 9.0, Runnymede 9.0, Listening Post 9.0, David 9.0, and so on down to Egyptian Flower (N.Z.) 6.7. Other Maorilanders were handicapped as follows:—Hipo 8.1, Father’s Voice 8.0. Horoscope 7.7, Mars 7.4, Phocion 7.3, Estuary 7.2, All Pink 72, Nouveau Riche 6.11. Limited 6.7, Egyptian Flower 6.7. The three-year-olds mentioned above and not well known in Maoriland are Phocion. by Boniform— Esther. and Mars, by Martian—Bronze. The Sydney Cup (two miles- list was headed by Pilliewinkie 9.13, Eastern Monarch (imp.) 9.12, Lilypond 9.9, Heroic 9.7, Count Cavour 9.6, David 9.4, Spearfelt 9.4. The Banker 92. Pantheon 9.2. Manfred 9.1, Te Monanui 8.13. Listening Post 8.12. Accarak 8.12. Bolet Satin 8.12. Other New Zealanders dealt with were: Runnymede 8.10, Acamar (Martian —Polymnia 4 years) 7.10, Horoscope 75, Mars 7.3, Phocion 7.0, All Pink 7.0, Navs (Martian—Lady Lucy) 6.7. Commenting on the Sydney Cup weights the Sydney Sun remarks:—“Pilliewinkie, following in the footsteps of Gloaming and Rapine, has given Mr Wilson a holy dread of New Zealand geldings, as the four-year-olds Count Cavour and The Banker have

been highly rated with 91b' and 51b respectively over w.f.a. The Banker is already in Australia, but the weight will probably keep the Count in his horqe Land.” The writer referred to might also have added that the weights allocated them have kept other New Zealanders at home. It is reported from Melbourne that the well-known Victorian trainer, James Scobie, will be represented at the Australian Jockey Club’s Autumn meeting by Cyden (winner of the Ascot Vale Stakes for two-year-olds) and Pilliewinkie. In addition to the Sydney Cup Pilliewinkie has been engaged in the leading weight-for-age races at Randwick, where he will meet Windbag and a number of other horses which were not racing at the Victoria R.C. Autumn gathering. WAIMATE RACING CLUB. AN INTERESTING ANNUAL FIXTURE. MOUNTAIN LION WINS CUP. (Per United Press Association.) Waimate, March 18.
