TROWERN DEFEATS VOLAIRE. GRIFFITHS BEATS LEWIS. 1 (Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, March 18. The professional contest between Reginald Trowern, of Auckland (10.1) and Eugene Volaire (10.4 J was decided at His Majesty’s Theatre this evening. Trowern proved himself one of the most vigorous and tireless fighters ever seen in Dunedin and during the eleven rounds over which the bout went Volaire, who appeared to be somewhat out of condition, had to take some very severe punishment. Time and again Trowern connected with a fierce left to the face and a following right swing and he also outpunched Volaire at close range. At the end of the second round Trowern doubled up from a blow which appeared to be low, and fell against the ropes. The gong then went. Commencing the third Trowern again opened with a fierce attack and more than held his own right through till the eleventh round. Half-way through this round Trowern again doubled up from a blow which was no doubt low and the referee, Mr Don Paterson, called: “That’ll do.” He led Trowern to his corner and held his arm as the winner. The action of the referee was greeted with a storm of booing and Volaire whose blow, there was no question, had been accidentally delivered, was greeted with loud cheers. Volaire’s chance of winning, however, was only by the knock out route and he did not seem to have much chance of thus achieving victory as Trowern was always willing to take all Volaire could give him and come back for more. In the preliminary bout T. Griffiths 8.64, was matched against R. Lewis, exfeatherweight champion of Queensland, 9.6. The pair were not well matched and Griffiths realised this. By very clever footwork he generally managed to evade the strong attacks of Lewis and scored repeatedly with his very useful left head. Towards the end of the fight Griffiths came in and mixed it with his opponent and won well with a very large margin of pointe.
