DEER MEAT

' > EXPORT TRADE TRIAL SHIPMENT TO NEW YORK DIFFICULTIES OVERCOME. (Special to the Times.) Wellington, March 17. After overcoming many difficulties, Mr R. Philp, of Wellington, who is pioneering the export trade in deer meat,-has succeeded in getting a trial shipment to a New York firm whose report thereon may be expected to arrive shortly. If, as a'result of this practical trial, the American firm is able to quote a firm price for a substantial shipment, Mr Philp states that he will have something definite to work on at the selling end of the business. In an interview With a reporter to-day, Mr Philp explained that even when he knew that a satisfactory price was awaiting him overseas he would still have to face the problem of organising a sufficient supply of deer meat at a cost that would leave a small margin of profit. Shooting and transport difficulties involved in transferring deer from hoof to freezer did not appear to dismay him. “I am confident,” he said, “that I can hunt, kill, transport, freeze and ship high quality deer meat at a cost that will leave a small margin under prices ruling in overseas markets. I have w'orked hard and long to put the proposition on a commercial basis,” proceded Mr Philp. “If trade develops successfully—and I am sure that it will-it will do more than utilise what is now a waste asset. It will also give employment and bring money into the country. Having worked in silence so long, I think I am now entitled to say that at last my efforts are within a measurable distance of producing results. I have now inquiries not only from America, but from England, Singapore and other places.”
