SHORTHORN SOCIETY

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. The annual general meeting of the Shorthorn Society of New Zealand was held in the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce Hall, Christchurch, on Tuesday, November 10, Mr R. E. Alexander presiding. The balance sheet showed the society to be in a good financial position, the assets exceeding the liabilities by £909 9s 6d. It was reported that during the year volume XX. of the Herd Bobk had been published containing the pedigrees of 285 bulls, 535 heifers and 111 transfers of ownership, and that volume XXI. was in print and would contain the pedigrees of approximately 285 bulls, 700 cows and heifers and 100 transfers of ownership. It was hoped to get the new volume into the hands of breeders by the middle of December. The society’s shields offered for the champion Shorthorn bull at the various shows resulted in the following awards being made:— Napier.—Mr R. D. Douglas McLean’s “Royal Baron.” Christchurch.—Mr Leonard White’s “Prince Paul’’ (imp.). Invercargill.—Mr L. W. Stony’s “Westburn Marquis of Queensbury.” Greymouth.—Mr John Dean’s “Westburn Marquis of Argyle.” As suggested at the previous annual meeting the executive obtained a challenge cup at a cost of 25 guineas for competition at Royal Shows, to be awarded to the best Shorthorn (male or female) exhibited, and at the 1924 show thus was won by Mr R. D. D. McLean. Members were urged to continue the registration of all their stock for, although adverse markets had ruled during the last few years, there were strong indications of improving conditions in this respect. Since the close of the financial year Mr Arnaud McKellar had been appointed aecretary in place of Mr Banks, and the registered office of the society was now 227 Manchester Street, Christchurch. Correspondence could be addressed to Post Office Box 122, Christchurch. Mr R. E. Alexander was re-elected president and Mr A. Hunter vice-president for the ensuing year.

Mr John Deans (South Island) and Mr H. Gascoigne (North Island) were re-elected members of the council.
