Messrs C. W. Rattray and H. D. Stronach (both of Dunedin) arrived in Invercargill by the evening express yesterday. Mr Peter Reid, Lower Shot over (Queenstown), who has been spending a few days in. Invercargill, returned to his home yesterday morning. Passengers by the first express to Dunedin yesterday morning included the members of the Otago cricket team, which on Thursday concluded its annual fixture with Southland. Mr and Mrs Hawkins and family were passengers from London to Wellington on the Port Hobart, which arrived at Bluff on Tuesday. Mr Hawkins is well known in the Auckland district, being managingdirector of the Farmers' Co-operative Association in that province. An Auckland Press Association message states that Joseph Sylvester Warrington Jackson died at the Auckland Infirmary. He was over a hundred years of age. Deceased was an officer in the Royal Artillery, and came to New Zealand when a young man. He took part in the Maori War. At the monthly meeting of the Southland Education Board yesterday morning, it was resolved on the motion of the chairman (Mr Hugh Smith) to forward a message of condolence to his Majesty’s representative in Wellington sympathising with the Royal family in the loss of the Queen Mother. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect.
