The force of the explosion in the Bankatown quarry was so terrific that the victims’ bodies were found thirty feet from the edge of the quarry; The explosion shifted 200 tons of stone and the men received the full force of-it. The victims were shockingly mutilated, and two of those injured are not expected to recover. O’Brien has been identified as a resident of Lidcombe. The accident occurred a few minutes before the work ended for the day. One opinion is that the men were ramming home a charge of gelignite when the charge exploded.
