The Cunard Commonwealth and Dominion Line motor-ship Port Hobart completed loading at Bluff yesterday, and sailed at 11.15 ajn. for Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington and Napier, from whence she shall finally load for London. The steamer Merton Hall was expected to leave New York on November 25 with general cargo and case oil for discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, Hobart and Launceston. The Waimana, which sailed from Auck land on October 20 for New York, Boston and London, has arrived at Boston. She is manned by volunteer seamen. The Government steamer Tutanekai was due at Dunedin yesterday from Wellington direct. On Monday the Governor-General and his suite will board the vessel, which will sail on Monday afternoon for Stewart Island, the West Coast Sounds and Auckland. A wireless message received from the Remuera states that the vessel will arrive at Auckland at daybreak on Monday from London and Southampton. The Remuera is bringing passengers, mails and cargo. The Port Darwin left Wellington. early on Wednesday morning for London, via Panama. In view of the increasing employment of motor ships and the influence which they are exerting in the world's shipping position, it is of interest to note the recent tendency of some owners to build up big fleets of this type of vessel after having gained experience with steamers on similar services. According to The Motor Ship, the largest motor ship fleet under one ownership is that of the Danish East Asiatic Company, with 111,000 tons gross, followed by the Swedish Brostrom Lines (92,000 tons) and the (Mo Wilhelmsen Line (79,000 tons). Among British concerns the Glen Line leads the way with 68,000 tons, and it is significant that since each of these shipping firms took delivery of their first motor vessel they have not built a single steamer.
