SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODRED. South Canterbury J.C. Spring meeting to-day. Forbury Park T.C. Spring fixture opens Thursday. Feilding J.C. Spring gathering will open to-day. Auckland Cup handicaps are due on Tuesday next. Takapuna J.C. Spring meeting to-day and Monday. Methven R.C. acceptances will cl % on Monday, November 30. C. Gieseler (Wingatui), easily beans the trainers’ list. J. Barry heads the winning jockeys’ list with 281 first homes. C. Emerson is second on the riding list with 27 successes. Weights for the Auckland R.C. Railway Handicap on Tuesday. The demoralising Cornflower won at Umaru races on Thursday. A minor meeting will be held on the Rosehill (Sydney) track to-day. Schooling over hurdles is stated to be imfroving the manners of Rafa. Forbury Park T.C. Spring meeting is due on Thursday and Saturday next week. Riccarton track watchers expect to see Philanderer win a race soon. Runnymede is stated to be eligible for the N.S.W. and Victorian St. Legers. Gore Trotting Club Annual meeting entries are due on Friday next (December 4.) The racing at the Takapuna J.C.’s Spring meeting to-day and Monday will be very interesting. Despite his expensive failures at Riccarton, Kilfaire may race well at Feilding. D. Withers heads both winning lists in the trotting game—reinsmen and trainers. Ring the Bell may be first in order of selection in Borough Handicap (9f.), at Takapuna to-day. M. B. Edwards drove Peter Elect winner of the Nelson Trotting Cup, £250 (2m.) last week. The Alison Cup Handicap, £5OO (one mile two furlongs and a-half), will be the leading event at Takapuna to-day. Miss Winkie was beaten at Timaru on Thursday, but the half-sister to Avispado will win again very soon. The defunct light-harness stallion, Logan Pointer, heads the list of winners (26), with Nelson Bingen (17) next. It is stated that Sun Up may race in Auckland at holiday time and it is hoped that jumping will make him more reliable. A new direct tramway system will convey passengers to the gates of Forbury Park next week for the first time at a reasonable price. Recent happenings in sprint races at more than one South Island fixture lead to the suspicion that “wagering away from the track” is having a baleful influence. Jemidar, by Martian—Ayah, a two-year-old who ranks as a half-brother to Inferno, and of whom good things are expected, has resumed work with Quinlivan’s team at Trent ham. It is very pleasing to learn that Money Order is working again at Riccarton, as he appears to be the best of Paper Money’s progeny, and it is unfortunate that he should be difficult to prepare. Veteran galloping and light harness trainer. R. Emerson, of Riccarton, landed a double at Timaru on Thursday with Winkie’s Best and Miss Minerva, but C. Emerson, appears to have gone close to the border line in getting the latter first past the post. It is freely prophesised in Canterbury that a large number of horses from Riccarton and other adjacent centres will campaign in the south during the holiday season. The fact that substantial prize money will be on offer at Dunedin, Wyndham and Invercargill has been duly noted and entry forms applied for, to say nothing of railway arrangements being carefully scanned. It is reported that Mr J. C. N. Grigg, who has had an extended holiday in England, is expected back in Maoriland about the end of the month. He is bringing a filly by Gainsborough—sire of the South-land-owned Celebrity ll.—back with him. The other horses he purchased were re-sold prior to his departure from the Old Country. Very little has been heard of Listening Post of late, but the Solferino gelding is going on the right way in his work on the Southland R.C. tracks. It is noticeable that he is being galloped the reverse way, which may be interpreted to mean that his owner has some idea of racing his trusty steed at Ellerslie round about Christmas time. If anything like favourably treated at the Auckland R.C.’s Summer fixture, F. W. Ellis’ pupil might succeed in adding to his lengthy winning list on many courses. It is expected that a high-priced Aus-tralian-bred three-year-old may make his debut in the Aorangi Trial Plate at the Feilding J.C. meeting this afternoon. The juvenile referred to is prepared by J. H. Jefferd, private mentor to Mr A. B. Williams of Rapine fame, and will compete as Mah Jong. The Australian colt is a son of Comedy King and Chu San and cost 850 guineas when disposed of at the yearling sales of 1924 in Sydney on behalf of Mr Norman Falkiner, of Victoria.

Last week (writes “The Watcher” in the Dominion) a prospective buyer asked the owner of Demure to put a price on the filly, but, it is reported, on a sum running into four figures being mentioned no business resulted. Demure, who is a four-year-old daughter of Panmure, ran third in her only start last season—a hack race at the Waverley Winter meeting. This season, prior to her wins at Ashhurst and Levin, she ran third in a maiden race at the Egmont Hunt fixture.

The six-year-old mare, Geranial, has been taken up again by F. W. Ellis, following on a lengthy spell. The daughter of Solferino—Carmonia, by San Francisco (imp.) —Campania, by Robinson Crusoe, is carrying a considerable amount of superfluous condition and her trainer will have some difficulty in getting her ready to race at holiday time if that is the intention of her owner, Mr J. L. Hannon. At the same time, the speedy little galloper looks as bright as a star.

The six-year-old mare Obedio, by Obsono —Blackfillan, has rejoined the ranks of the workers on the Southlana R.C. tracks. In five starts last season her test performance was to finish in third berth in the Trial Handicap (7f.) at the Rz urton R.C.’s Easter fixture to Laughie and Swimashore She is a well-shaped galloper and may develop improved form this aeasou.

A recruit has arrived at Endeavour Lodge to be put through her facings by J. A. Rowland, in the shape of a five-year-old mare called Balglory, by Balboa—Golden Knight mare. During her early racing career she competed at several hack fixtures in Eastern district, winning at the Pine B.dsh and other meetings. Her only ap- , pearance at a totalizator gathering was in the Trial Plate Handicap at the Wyndham R.C.’s Annual meeting last season, when she displayed pace over the early part of a five furlong trip. She ran unplaced at the finish, the event being won by Set Sail from Sweet Melody and Rapier, three difficult propositions to tackle over a short journey. Her dam would probably be by Golden Knight from Glory, by Calibre — Diploma, by Medallian—Take Miss, by King of Clubs—Miss Flat, by Peter Flat—Mountain Nymph (imp.), so Balglory is well enough bred if the lines quoted represent bfcr statement of descent.

The black mare, Bonnie Olive, has improved very much as far as appearance goes since she joined the team of the local trainer J. Pankhurst, Junior. The daughter of Adjudge—Bonnie Ouida has speed to burn, but, so far, has failed to stay too well in anything like promising company. Last season she started in fifteen races, winning once, gaining second place on three occasions, and recording two third placings. There is reason for hope that she will improve under the local mentor to carry the colours of Mr T. E. Tayler.

The well-bred Gold Bell—Cardinal and Blue filly foal, whose arrival in the world at Mr S. Todd’s local light harness stud was duly chronicled early this week, represents strong in-breeding to the famous Rothschild family, to say nothing of her other high credentials from a studmaster’s point of view. Her sire, Gold Bell, is a son of Capitalist, who in turn was got by Rothschild, while her dam, Cardinal and Blue, descends from Copa de Oro and Lady Sybil, by Rothschild from Thelma (probably the best producing matron in the N.Z. Trotting Stud Book). Her pedigree thus includes the most successful strains of light harness racehorses in New Zealand up to a few years ago, as Rothschild, Wildwood, Kentucky and other noted winning and breeding blends figure strongly, while her imported ancestor, Copa de Oro came to New Zealand with a pacing record'for a mile of 1.59 placed against his name in America. He was bred in California, and is claimed to have been the best horse ever produced on the Pacific side of the United States to campaign in the East of America and return with better than a 2min record to his native State. The youngster born this week may not be a first-class racer, but her blood is invaluable in the trotting world, and it has to be remembered that Mr J. Duffy’s recent New Zealand Trotting Derby winner, Native Chief, is a son of a Copa de Oro mare, viz., Regina de Oro from that brilliant mare Regina Belle by Bellman.

The corrected list of acceptances for the first day of the Feilding Jockey Club’s Spring meeting, which opens this afternoon, is published elsewhere. Following on the appearance of the acceptances a number of winners at the Levin R.C. Annual meeting were duly penalised by the weight-adjustor, Mr J. E. Henrys.

The privately-trained string owned by Mr W. T. Hazlett, and prepared on the Southland R.C.’s tracks has been recruited from Hawke’s Bay, F. J. McKay having had the well-bred Dazzling Light placed under his care. The sister to Razzle Dazzle and half-sister to Gold Light looks well, but is being treated teqderly in the meantime, as she displayed symptoms of soreness after racing at the recent N.Z. Cup fixture.

If looks go for anything, Bran Pie is going to develop into an attractive mare. Last season the half-sister to Listening Post and Laughing Eyes presented a somewhat mean appearance, but during the past few weeks the Buckwheat mare has furnished and filled out in a very noticeable manner, while she has settled down to her work in a very encouraging manner. It was also apparent during the Gore R.C. Spring meeting that the daughter of an imported sire has developed stamina with age, a fact demonstrated by the history of Buckwheat’s progeny in England.

Following on his race in the Winton Cup his trainer, R. McKay, has not called upon Kilfane to gallop seriously, and the Sunny Lake gelding is freshening up under easy treatment.

Local mentor J. A. Rowland does not intend to have any cranky performers at the barrier as far as Endeavour Lodge is concerned if patience and practice go for anything. His two Martian filly pupils from Trichas and Lady Kinloch respectively, together with the elder mare, Balglory, are being given consistent education at the starting post. For some time past they have been regularly exercised in walking out from the strings and, so far, the trio have pleased their master and onlookers who have followed their educational course.

The three-year-old gelding Jack o’ Lantern has practically recovered from the cold that troubled him for some weeks, and is now putting on some of his lost racing condition. The chestnut son of Fleetham behaved much better than usual at the barrier in his two starts at the Winton J.C. meeting, and it is apparent that he is going to overcome his nervousness when lined up to commence a race—he does not like to be associated with his rivals while awaiting the starting signal. *

Recent racing under substantial weights does not appear to have done Queen Balboa any harm and R. McKay’s charge presents a bright and well-trained appearance. She has been to some extent on the easy list since her displays at Winton, but will soon be stretching out again.

It is very satisfactory to learn that the profit on the recent Winton Jockey Club Annual fixture was a substantial one, working out at between £540 and £5OO. This surplus will be greatly appreciated by the management of the Club and will probably lead to a number of minor improvements being made on the Winton course. It may be suggested that the WJ.C. seriously consider the establishment of a straight run to the far turn for six furlongs events, as the present ground raced over means a sharp bend shortly after leaving the barrjer, and owners, trainers and jockeys know to their cost what this means.

Trainer G. Hope is devoting a considerable amount of attention to the preparation of the veteran galloper Baldowa. In the meantime, the son of Baldowa is looking particularly well, but it will be some time yet before he can be tried out in earnest to see if he can be raced again.

During the current week the tn ares Naomi, by Vice Admiral, and Gunshy, by Calibre, have been mated with imported Panmure. Both matrons are tending faols by Balboa, Naomi mothering a sturdy colt, while Gunshy is the jealous guardian of her first foal, a filly of aristocratic appearance. Gunshy, who is about 14 years of age, has never before proved with foal, hence the advent of a Balboa filly is doubly welcomed by her owner, Mr Timpany. She is a very nice stamp of a brood mare, and there is ample time yet to enable her to produce winners, despite her late start as a matron. Prior to producing the Balboa youngster referred to, Naomi bred a colt foal to Gay Lad, and the son of an English sire is a sturdy customer now ranking as a rising two-year-old. He is full of courage and vitality and can move fast or jump obstacles when he feds that way inclined in the paddocks of his home quarters.

The Solferino-Zia gelding, Solzia, an inmate of the stable presided over by F. W. Ellis, is now rounding up into racing shape. The little fellow ran a veiy encouraging

race at Winton when he finished in third place in the Awarua Handicap to Frivol and Queen Balboa. He sustained a rough passage by the way, and did well to come along at the finish and secure the money attached to third berth. SOUTH CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB. ACCEPTANCES OF TO-DAY. FOOTBALL NEW ZEALAND FORMATION. LONDON, November 26. The International Rugby player, Kershaw, writing to the Evening Standard, says he understands the experiment with the New Zealand formation of eight backs and seven forwards will be tried in one team engaged in the Irish trial match against the other using the orthodox eight pack. It. is an open secret that clubs in the south of Ireland are deeply influenced by theories so attractively put into practice during the last visit of the All Blacks. The Irish Internationals, Crawford and Browne, took pains to get first-hand from Porter, Richardson, and Nicholls an explanation of the New Zealanders’ strategy and striking evidence was furnished at Oxford last week, when Dublin University, playing the New Zealand formation, so heavily defeated the Oxford University that not only Irishmen have been impressed by the New Zealand strategy.
