VAGRANT VERSE

WINTER MORN AT BLUFF. (Written for the Southland Times.) Westward the Takatimos glow In raiment woven of purest snow; Eastward the Hokonuis rise Dull-brown to greet the azure skies; In front the waters of the bay Are lying mantled o’er with gray With here and there a rosy tint Caught from the Sun’s first radiant glint. Creeps by a quiet little breeze That sighs amid the sombre trees, Chill, chill its breath as slow, so slow, It creeps where Ocean’s waters flow, But there upon a pine’s top spray A thrush pours forth his roundelay. He sings as tho’ the Winter drcar Had passed and Summertime were here. Robert Francis, Bluff. June 11, 1925.
