AMERICAN SCANDALS

EVADING TAX PAYMENTS. CHARGES AND COUNTER CHARGES. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Sun Cable.) WASHINGTON, March 12. How hundreds of millions bf tax payments are alleged to have been evaded by big corporations was described before a Senate Committee. Senator Couzens started the inquiry, and now is himself being investigated on a charge that he still, owes the Government 10,000,000 dollars in overdue taxes on huge earnings and Ford stock. Senator Couzens immediately replied by calling Secretary Mellon to explain why the United States Steel Corporation allowed the use of the amortisation scheme, which saved them 27,000,000 dollars and the Aluminium Company a third of that amount.

Senator Couzens promises another ‘Teapot Dome,” which itself is in Court again. The Government has opened an action in the Idaho Courts to recover great oil properties leased by the former Secretary Fall.
