CROWN PROSECUTOR.

A NEW APPOINTMENT. MR WILLLXM MACALISTER RETIRES. The Wellington correspondent of the Southland Times telegraphed yesterday that Mr Horace James Macalister, LLB., has been appointed Crown Solicitor at Invercargill in place of his father, Mr William Macalister. who has resigned. Mr William Macalister relinquishes his appointment as Crown Solicitor after holding it for sixteen years. It was in 1909, after the death of Mr T. M. Macdonald, that Mr Macalister became Crown Solicitor on the recommendation of Sir John Findlay, Attorney-General at that time. Since then Mr Macalister has discharged the duties of the position with distinction and marked success, earning the respect both of the Supreme Court Bench and of his colleagues at the Bar. He is succeeded on his retirement by his eldest son, Mr Horace J. Macalister. On the recommendation of the present Attorney-General, Sir Francis Bell, Mr Horace Macalister receives this important appointment at rhe early age of 36 years. Mr Horace Macalister was born in Southland and educated at the Southland Boys’ High School. On leaving that institution he joined the National Bank of New Zealand, Ltd., at Invercargill, but remained in its service for two years only. Deciding to take up law, he entered the New Zealand University at Victoria College, Wellington, where he studied under that distinguished Jurist, Professor (afterwards Sir John) Salmond. Alter graduating LLB. Mr Horace Macalister returned to Invercargill and entered the office of Messrs Macalister Bros. He was admitted to partnership in the firm in 1913, and has since practised in the Supreme Court and the Magistrate’s Court. In 1921, when Mr William Macalister took a trip Home, Mr H. J. Macalister was acting Crown Solicitor in Invercargill, and it is to be presumed that his work for the Crown in that capacity won the approval of the Attorney-General and prepared the way for the appointment he has received. It may be mentioned that while Mr William Macalister has resigned the Crown Solicitorship, he will continue in practice as senior member of the firm of Macalister Bros., but will not engage in Court work.
