A special meeting of the Gore Borough Council was held on Monday evening, when the balance-sheet for the year ended March 31, 1924, was adopted, as was the new Borough electoral roll. The Gore Fire Brigade’s team returned from the Christchurch Demonstration on Monday evening, and was warmly welcomed by fellow firemen and other friends. A fine trophy, the Duplex Cup, along with some £6O odd in prizemoney, comes to Gore in consequence cf their successes. Before the business of the Gore Magistrate’s Court was commenced on Monday, Mr D. L. Poppelwell, addressing the Bench, said he thought it appropriate to mention the fact that Mr John Mac Gibbon, cue of the oldest Justices of the Peace in the district, had passed away. Mr Poppelwell expressed the general regret of the members of the Bar at the demise of one so long associated with the affairs of the district. It was suggested that the Court be adjourned for a period, out of respect for the late Justice, and to allow members of the Bar 1 to attend the funeral. Mr H. J. Dixon, ’ S.M., announced that it was his intention to ‘ adjourn the Court as suggested. ' Unfavourable weather conditions affected ' the attendance at the Salvation Army’s ! harvest festival entertainment and sale on Monday evening, but those who did attend were well rewarded. After a short but enjoyable concert programme had been gone ’ through, Mr J. J. Green auctioned the goods ’ displayed. The audience responded well, and good prices were realised. Ensign Watkin extended thanks to all soldiers and friends who had given cash or goods to make the festival a success, and also expressed ap- ’ preciation of Mr Green’s kindness in coming to conduct the auction.
