ASSAULT ALLEGED
VICTIM IN SERIOUS CONDITION. A disturbance took place amongst some men in Cargill road, near the South Dunedin Fire Brigade Station, at 6 o’clock on Sunday evening, as the result of which a man named Robert McGregor was conveyed to the hospital in a serious condition. On Monday morning James Hugh McLellan was charged in the Police Court, Dunedin, with having unlawfully assaulted McGregor, so as to cause him actual bodily harm. Senior-Sergeant Mathieson asked for a remand, as the assaulted man was in the hospital. The doctor had stated that McGregor was too ill to be X-rayed, but there was every indication of his having sustained a fracture of the skull. Mr Gillies, who appeared for the accused, asked his Worship to fix bail. e cused, he added, was a young married m , and his family were well-known in South Dunedin. The Senior-Sergeant asked that any bail allowed be of a substantial nature, as there was every likelihood of the assaulted man dying. The Magistrate fixed bail at £5O, with one surety of a similar amount, the accused report daily to the police.
