GISBORNE, January 26. | The most sensational tram accident since ’ the commencement of the service in Gis- . borne occurred on Saturday evening, when Pevreal’s Muriwai bus collided with the ' Gladstone Road tram close to Mill Road. The sides of both the tram and the bus were completely torn away, the windows smashed, and the heavy studs in the tram •plinterad to smithereens. A passenger in the bus, • Miss Annie Collier, of Manutuke, was thrown out on to the road, suffering a fractured arm, but the tram passengers, though , shaken, escaped without serious injury. The driver of the bus, Mr E. Pevreal, of • Muriwai, said he saw the tram approaching, . and when about three chains away pulled j off on to his correct side. The next thing ■ he knew was that the bus had struck, the | tram, but he did not think that any seri1 ous damage had been done, and so came i on into town at about 10 miles an hour. ' When he got to Carnarvon street he looked ; back and found that his passenger was not . there. He did not take any great notice ■ of that, as he thought she must have got ; off on the road, although he had not actui ally stopped the bus. When he reached the garage he was astonished to find that the bus had suffered such damage. The motorman of the tram said he saw the bus approaching him along the read. When it was about 50 yards away it started to pull clear, but did not allow sufficient room. The side of the bus caught the side of the tram, both sides being torn right off.
