BISHOP AVERILL
WILL HE SUCCEED DR JULIUS? SPECULATION IN CHRISTCHURCH. (Special to the Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 27. A report is current in Auckland that Bishop Averill is likely to be asked to succeed Dr Julius as Bishop of Christchurch. Bishop Averill was vicar of St. Michael’s Church, Christchurch, and was moat popular. He then became Bishop of Waiapu, and later Bishop of Auckland. When asked by a reporter to-night if any action had been taken locally, Archbishop Julius said: “That is purely a rumour. No one has any power or authority to appoint anybody, or to offer any names until the Synod meets in May.” In conversation upon the same subject, the Very Reverend Dean Carrington said: “There will be many rumours of that nature. The whole thing is still quite indefinite, and nothing whatever has been done. The Committee of Inquiry which was brought into existence is investigating in all directions, and, so far, no names are forward officially, nor will they be until the special Synod meeting takes place in May. In the meantime the only move that is being made is simply in the nature of a general inquiry.” Questioned by a reporter, the Ven. Archdeacon P. B. Haggitt said that the Committee of Inquiry, composed of clergy and laymen, was simply considering the names of likely - persons for the position, not nominations, and nothing official would be done until May.
