TRAGEDY IN WHARE
TWO BURNED TO DEATH. HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIEND. (Per United Press Association). BLENHEIM, January 27. The police have been advised by the constable at Seddon that William Cane and Valentine Mitchell, roadmen, were burnt to death at Blind River. Cane’s body was found amongst the debris of the whare in which the men lived. Mitchell had crawled across the road and was found burnt, face down in a ditch. Details show that Mitchell undoubtedly met his death in a gallant attempt to rescue Cane from the burning whare. Cane’s body, horribly charred, was found among the ashes of the whare, and Mitchell’s 35 yards away in a ditch, where he evidently crawled in search of water to alleviate the burns. Part of Cane’s flesh was still adhering to Mitchell’s fingers showing that he had attempted to rescue his friend, but had found him already incinerated.
