GALES IN CANTERBURY
DAMAGE TO CROPS. HARVESTING SUSPENDED (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 27. The south-west storm which set in on Monday morning continued during the night, though it was chiefly a wind, which blew for some time with the forfte of a gale. The rainfall was not heavy. Unfortunately, the strong wind has beaten down man/ crops which were standing, and the loss in this connection will be heavy. Reports from country districts indicate that the stormy weather has been widespread, and as unwelcome to the farming community as it, was general. The apple orchards have suffered, and naturally harvesting operations are at a standstill. It will take a day or two of fine weather before the resumption of threshing and stacking wiil take place.
