MINISTERIAL. Cabinet has arranged a re-distribution of Hon W. Downie Stewart’s portfolios consequent upon his visit to America, which will be of three or four months’ duration. Hon G. J. Anderson will assume the duties of Minister of Industries and Commerce, while Sir Francis Bell will take Customs. Captain R. McPherson, M.C., of Invercargill, who was in command of the 11th Battery at the recent Wyndham camp, has been gazetted a Major. The friends of Mr J. A. Crockett will regret to hear that he is at present very ill in Dunedin, where he underwent a serious operation last week. Mr J. R. Hamilton (Winton) and Mr John Fisher (Otautau) went to Wellington yesterday morning to attend a meeting of the Dairy Control Board. The death is announced by the Press Association of Hon. James Burton Turner, M.L.C., of Fiji, aged 75. He died while on a visit to Auckland.

Dr Lawrence Ladbrook, a New Zealander, now in London, has been appointed assistant medical superintendent of the Auckland Hospital from 25 applications.—Press Association.

Mr Frank Scott (son of the late Mr A. A. Scott), of Timaru, and formerly of Gore, has been transferred to the staff of the Bank of New Zealand, Gore. Mr Scott commenced duties at Gore yesterday. Mr Noel W. Nelson. Dunedin manager of the New Zealand Insurance Company, has received notice of his transference to the managership of the Wellington branch. His position at Dunedin will be taken by Mr A. M. Cameron, recently manager at Rangoon, and at present relieving manager of the Sydney branch. At a meeting of the Southland Education Board, held yesterday, the following teachers’ appointm nts were confirmed:— Thomas A. D. McFarlane, sole teacher, Waikawa Valley; Ralph N. McDonald, first assistant, Mataura; Myra Patton, first assistant, Oreti Plains, and Margaret R. Currie, first assistant, West Plains.

At a general meeting of the Northend Bowling Club last evening, it. was decided to insert the following in the minute book, the motion being moved by Mr J. H. Loudon: “That with the most sincere and deep regret we record the death of Mr P. L. Gilkison. The late Mr Gilkison was our first President, and one of the founders of the Northend Bowling Club. He was ever ready to do all he possibly could to promote the best interests of the Club, and by his generous nature and happy disposition endeared himself to all. We wish to express ou deepest sorrow at the loss of our dear old friend.”

Mr. A. R. Galbraith, M.1.C.E., F.S.E., F.R.San.I, city engineer at Perth, Western Australia, who has been appointed city engineer and surveyor of the City of Christchurch, is an engineer with extensive experience, and his salary will be £l2OO a year. For five years (1909-1914), Mr Galbraith was Director of Public Works, Zanzibar Protectorate (British East Africa). In the following three years he held the position of civil engineer and superintending civil engineer for the Royal Australian Navy at Cockatoo Lsland, where road construction was carried out. Freni 1918 to 1920 he was engaged first on constructional work, and then as civil engineer to the Broken Hill Proprietary Company’s Iron and Steel Works, Port Waratah. In 1920 he became City Engineer at Perth, Western Australia, a position he still holds. Mr Galbraith’s engagement at Perth is terminable at three months’ notice, or sooner by special arrangement.
