COLLIERY DISASTER
McGOWAN’S BODY RECOVERED. All day Saturday a large number of men were working hard in clearing away the debris from the shaft of the Taratau mine in which James McGowan and David Jordan were suddenly overwhelmed by a fall of gravel and timber on Thursday afternoon. On Friday Jordan was recovered, practically unhurt, but McGowan, whose body could not be moved, was found to be dead. After strenuous efforts by the workmen McGowan’s body was brought to the surface at 3.55 on Saturday afternoon. INQUEST OPENED. An inquest on the body of McGowan was formally opened at Kaitangata before Mr Dixon, S.M. (sitting as coroner). Evidence of identification was taken and the inquest was adjourned sine die.
