SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODRED. Tapanui Racing Club acceptances are due Wednesday. N.Z.M. Troiiing Club handicaps are due on Tuesday next. Increased totalisator returns resulted at Wellington R.C. meeting. Hororata R.C. will give £llOO at its annual fixture on April 4. A.J.C. Anniversary meeting will conclude at Randwick to-day. Auckland two-year-old, Gold Acre, cost *•5O guineas in Sydney. A. Reed is appealing against the £2O fine for breaking engagement. When Rob returned a long price last week, he was backed in Invercargill. Pilliewinkie ran very badly in his races at Wellington R.C. gathering. Tlie racing record of Carpentier displays many expensive performances. Grand Knight was badly kicked at the post on Thursday at W.R.C. meeting. Having won Avondale Cup in September, Gold Light is now training off. Hard races on tw’o days at Trentham found Sunart out and he is being rested. It is reported that the judge's box at Trentham is to be shifted to a new position. Provided she retains her Trentham form, Mantua should be hard to beat at Winga»ui next month. When Merit won Metropolitan Handicap (6f._) on Thursday she ran 1.104, or 7-10 sees outside The Hawk’s record. In the Wellington R.C. Handicap Gold Light carried £3OOO, .or £lOOO better than landslide, the second selection. In the Douro Cup on Thursday Matin Bell was withdrawn at the last minute and the investments returned. A. Reed may not have broken an engagement to ride Matin Bell, but it is not uneomm for leading riders to fool owners. When Fool’s Paradise won on Saturday, he was ridden by C. Eastwood, who was unknown until the New’ Zealand Cup meeting. Rob was eleventh selection when he returned nearly a-quarter of a century at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting on Thursday last. Sixty-six sires were represented on the opening day at Trentham, the list being headed by Kilbroney, who claimed twelve representatives. It is disconcerting to learn that Listening Post was displaying signs of soreness after the Summer Handicap on Saturday, as this may mean a lengthy retirement. Last Crust, who was one of the most unlucky and consistent runners at Wellington last week, is only a four-year-old and may become a top-line sprinter. It is hoped by his connections, and not without reason, that Gold Acre will develop into a good three year-old. He ranks as a brother to Tangalooma, a weight-for age winner in Victoria. Quite a number of people have fallen into the error of thinking that Listening Post was only ranked as a sprinter up to the recent holiday season. They overlook the fact that he was only beaten by half a length in the Wyndham Cup (IJmJ last season by General Advance in 2.7 3-5, after meeting with interference from another starter in the run home. A cable message from Melbourne, dated January 24, states“ After the sale of the colt, Heroic, to Mr Wenke the latter entered the horse for the Newmarket Handicap. Mr Wenke was summoned before the Victoria Racing Club Committee regarding the ownership of the horse, and later a statement was issued that the evidence submitted did not satisfy the Committee, which decided to reject it.” ‘Tt is about forty years <dnce the Ellerslie trainer, J. E. Thorpe, paid a visit to Dargaville. On that occasion he rode Moonstone to victory in the Cup” (writes “Radio” in the N.Z. Sporting Review). This year he will be represented in that event by Right and Left. Since the foregoing lines were penned Right and Left won the Dargaville Cup and thus incurred a penalty for the Takapuna Cup. A Christchurch Star writer, “Argus,” has •omething of very great interest to say of a promising runner at Trentham on Thursday ; —“Mr G. D. Greenwood’s three-year-old, Carnot, created a good impression when be finished second in the Trial Plate at Trentham. He was not prominent until the straight was reached, but once in line for home he put in good work and only just failed to overhaul Gauntlet. Carnot is a well-bred customer, by Clarenceux, his dam, Y awn, being an Australian-bred mare by Cooltrim from Quietest, by Grafton from Slumber, by Trenton from Nightmare, so that he comes from the same family that gave Australia Wakeful, and which produced Noctuiform. Midnight Sun, Bon Reve, Bon Ton, Eligible and other high-class performers in New Zealand.” When Listening Post won the Wellington R.C. Handicap (Im. and 3fJ at Trentham on Thursday last the Solferino gelding set * record of 2min ISAsecs for the race and or Maoriland. The previous record, 2min 19secs, was held jointly by Eleus and Insurrection as established at Trentham. The Australasian record is 2min 17}secs, established by Tom McCarthy at Briebane (Queensland).

In commenting on the first day's racing at Trentham, the Wellington Post writer. “Vedette,” remarks:—“Listening Post was broadcasted as a runner in the Anniversary Handicap, but it can only be presumed that his connections changed their minds, for they would not deceive the public. He went a sterling race into second place in the Telegraph Handicap, after not appearing to receive the best of passages.”

The entry of Heroic for the Newmarket Handicap having been discarded by the Victorian Racing Club, it will be interesiis-5 to see what happens in Sydney’, where (he Valais colt is reported to have been engaged in leading Australian races. His new owner, Mr Martin Wenche, is a Sydneyite.

At the Newmarket sales in England last month Casteline, a four-year-old mare by Son in-Law—Castelline (dam of the Otau-tau-owned mare, Glentruin), was disposed of at 650 guineas. The half-sister to Mr A. Chisholm’s mare was stinted to Alan Breck. At the same sales. Brownhylda (Stedfast —Valhyric). the Oaks winner of 1923, was sold for 5100 guineas. Lady Tetrarch, a three-parts sister to The Tetrarch, and in foal to Gainsborough, was let go at 1400 guineas.

Commenting on the success of the New Zealand-bred Mars, by Martian—Bronze, at (Vic.) recently, Smith’s Weekly says:—“Sol paid 2000 guineas for a two-year-old half-brother by Martian to Grotesque—tne New Zealand Grotesque. Mars was the name bestowed upon him. He went into Robertson’s stable, but did not race as a two-year-old. The first race selected for him was the Maiden Plate at Mentone meeting last Friday. Race-goers as a rule don’t expect horses to win first

up. They wouldn’t know much about them anyway unless they were in training at either Flemington or Caulfield, where their track doings are recorded. Robertson had Mara fit enough to win more than a Maiden Plate, but there were probably only two people in the world who knew it. As a money-making proposition therefore it was pretty good, but Sol was evidently determined not to let the public on to the good thing. Mars was backed at starting price outside Victoria. It is known that £2OO was placed in Adelaide. Whether any went to Sydney or any of the other States is not known. It may not have been the owner’s money, but who else would know about the horse but Mr Green and his trainer? Anyway, there must have been some carelessness at the other end because news of the joke got back to the course before the race and thus some people who wouldn’t otherwise have known about it were able to back Mars. Sol had at least one commissioner at work on the course, but his activities weren’t such as would make Mars’ price come down with a bound. If the S.P. money belonged to the stable it proved a very profitable new year for Mr Green and his stable.”

Writing in the Wanganui Chronicle, “Early Bird” remarks:—“When Quest and Snatcher dead-heated at Trentham on Tuesday, both horses paid double-figure dividends. The connections of the latter horse are said to have thrown in for a good win, but they were rather unlucky in that everybody on the course but the judge saw that Snatcher actually beat Quest.”

Auckland horseman, J. O’Shea, has put up a notable “cup” record of late. He commenced with riding Illumination a dead-heat for first in the Allison Cup, won the Auckland Cup on Te Kara, the Summer Cup on Ruapapa, the Wellington Cup on Surveyor and the Douro Cup on Pelham.

The final day’s racing was favoured with ideal weather conditions. There was a large attendance and the Governor-General and party were again present. The course was again very fast, but on the hard side. Altogether, the fixture from every point of view was one of the most successful held at Trentham. The proceedings commenced with the Wallaceville High-weight Handicap (Im. and 3f.), for which six paraded, the choice of backers being in the following order:—Pantier, Kalakaua, Wench, Equitable, Otauru, Peach Brandy. From a good start Otauru led Wench, Equitable, Kalakaua. Peach Brandy and Pantier, but in the back straight Wench disposed Otauru of the lead, Pantier also moving up. Round the top turn Wench continued in the van, followed by Otauru, Kalakaua and Pan tier. At the false rail Kalakaua challenged Wench and, going on, won comfortably by a length, Otauru four lengths away third. Pantier was fourth and Peach Brandy fifth. The County Handicap (Im.) attracted ten starters, the order of favouritism being: —Carpentier, The Tank, Copper Nob, Quiescent, Star Ranger, Agitato, Goldspinner, Avonlea, Hyama, All Gold. The first to break the line was Hyama, followed by Agitato, Avonlea, The Tank, All Gold, Goldspinner and Copper Nob, with Carpentier (a hot favourite) tailing in the rear. Very little alteration took place until three furlongs from home, where Hyama still showed the waj’ to Agitato, Goldspinner, Avonlea, The Tank, Copper Nob, Quiescent and Star Ranger, with Carpentier still a bad last. Hyama, The Tank and Quiescent led into the straight, but here Star Ranger was seen coming through on the outside. Continuing his run, Star Ranger won by half a length from Copper Nob, Hyama half a length away third, followed by The Tank, Quiescent, Avonlea, Agitato and Carpentier.

Eight two-year-olds saddled up for the Hopeful Stakes (5f.), backers’ fancies being: Licinius, Star Stranger, Anthonie, Shirley, Vaudeville and Adavale (bracketed), Swift, Inoe. The first to show out were Swift and Anthonie, who led to the course proper, followed by Adavale, Star Stranger and Licinius. At the distance Anthonie had settled Swift’s pretentions and opened up a big gap from Licinius, who was next. Licinius, however, plugged along under punishment with great courage, finally losing to Anthonie by a neck, Star Stranger third three lengths away, followed by Adavale and Inoe. Vaudeville broke a blood vessel and was pulled up.

For the Melrose Handicap (7f.) twelve faced the barrier, favouritism being apportioned as follows:—Gauntlet, En Route, Matin Bell, Blonde Kilris. Jubilance, Sanctuary, Armchair, Pronto, Star Shell, Gardant, Bright Eyes, indicating that backers were -somewhat astray. Star Shell wt’s quickly on his feet, showing the way to Jubilance, Gauntlet, Kilris, Blonde and En Route. Five furlongs from home Kilris moved into second place, with Jubilance, En Route, Gauntlet and Bright Eyes next. Star Shell was still in command entering the straight, those within striking distance being Kilris, En Route, Gauntlet and Pronto. Fifty yards from the post Star Shell, Kilris and Jubilance, who had moved up smartly, were together, and, in a slashing finish, Kilris landed the stake by a bare head from Star Shell, with Jubilance a similar margin away. En Route was close up fourth, followed by Gauntlet and Pronto.

Suggestion, Tarleton, Mantua and Tuahine were scratched for the Summer Handicap. A field of ten went to the post. Pelham was the early favourite, but, just before time, Listening Post hardened and went to the barrier carrying most support. An even start saw Fool’s Paradise first to show out from Imperial Spark, Martian Miss and Pelham, while Snatcher moved up quickly. The order was unchanged until the five-furlong post was reached, when Imperial Spark took command from Snatcher, Pelham, Martian Miss and Fool’s Paradise, with Quest well back. Listening Post improved his position nearing the bend and he ran up to fourth place, while across the top Quest clapped on pace and shot in just behind the leaders. The last-named and Snatcher were first to turn for home, followed closely by Martian Miss, Fool’s Paradise and Sir Pam. Listening Post put in his run just after the entrance to the straight had been passed, but died away at the distance, and Fool's Paradise made the running. He was challenged by Martian Miss, Gut was never headed and came on to win by a length, with Martian Miss half a length ahead of Snatcher. Quest was close up fourth, after getting a bad run; then came Listening Post, Imperial Spark, Pilliewinkie, Pelham and Sir Pam. When returning to the birdcage Listening Post displayed signs of soreness. The order of selection was:—Listening Post, Pelham, Quest, Pilliewinkie, Snatcher, Imperial Spark, Martian Miss, Fool’s Paradise and Sir Pam.

Martulla and Quiescent were the missing acceptors in the Consolation Handicap. When the field paraded Suggestion was a hot favourite, with plenty of support for Deucalion and Mantua. After a little delay all got away nicely. Taking the bend Tresham was the pilot from Rivalry’, Suggestion, Merry Day, Kilceit, Deucalion and Mantua. Entering the back straight the field closed up, with Tresham and Mantua prominent, and the latter was going well. Deucalion moved up immediately afterwards and six furlongs from home the order was Tresham, Deucalion. Mantua, Rivalry, Suggestion and Kilceit, with Merry Day last. Once more the field got on fairly even terms and Merry Day went up nicely. Across the top the order was Tresham, Rivalry, Duo, Suggestion, Kilceit, Deucalion, Mantua, Tarleton, Merry Day and Glument, but there were only about six lengths between the whole field. Tresham was first into the straight, closely followed by Mantua, Rivalry, Merry Day, Suggestion and Deucalion. Kilceit came through at the distance and went to the front, followed by Deucalion and Suggestion, then the last-named, ridden skilfully by H. Gray, put in a fine run and won a great race by half a length, Deucalion being half a length better than Kilceit, with Mantua fourth. Then came Rivalry, Merry Day and Tarleton. The order of selection was:—Suggestion, Deucalion, Mantua, Rivalry, Tarleton, Duo, Tresham, Glument and Kilceit.

Merit was backed down to an exceptionally short price in the City Handicap, and Grand Knight was also in great demand. The scratching of Piquant and Finora left a field of six to battle out the race. Grand Knight was the early leader, attended by Last Crust, Merit and Ilka. Last Crust was first into the straight and on his flanks were Ilka, Merit and Puketoi, with Grand Knight further back, followed by Ares. At the distance it looked as though Last Crust was to beat, but Ilka came on with a great burst of speed and went on to win by a length from Last Crust, who was a length ahead of Merit. The* followed Puketoi, Grand Knight and Ares. The order was:—Merit, Grand Knight, Last Crust, Ilka, Puketoi and Ares.

Kilris and Gold Dollar were the scratchings in the Kaitoke Handicap, leaving twenty horses to face the starter. Gardenia,

Laughing Stock, Hallmark, Piquant and Finora were prominent and, turning into the straight, Megalo joined the leaders. When the field swung wide round the false rail Lake Uru, Flaming Ray, Piquant, Gardenia, Ruby Ring, Hallmark, Lady Ideal and Megalo were almost on even terms. In a great sprint up the straight Megalo made a fine spurt and romped home by two lengths, with Piquant a length ahead of Lady Ideal. Lake Uru was close up fourth; then came Ruby Ring, Subjection, Hallmark, Flaming Ray and Gardenia. The order was as follows:—Ruby Ring, Piquant and Anthem (bracketed), Finora, Lipsol, Megalo, Flaming Ray, Hallmark, Lady Ideal, Bonnie Nurse, Mountain Jean, Rangimoana, Lake Uru, Subjection, Gardenia, Salamis, Willow Wai, Laughing Stock, Solfraid and Kilmar.
