FARMERS’ UNION

INVERCARGILL BRANCH. MEETING UN SATURDAY. The Invercargill branch of the Farmers’ Union met on Saturday afternoon, Mr W. Ford taking the chair. There were present Messrs F. Price, T. Giller, J. D. Trotter, A. Henderson, J. Milne, P. Adamson, J. Gray, J. Calvert, J. Millar, J. Baineaves and D. McCallum. An apology was received from Mr T. A. Stephens, who wrote stating that his application for a boy immigrant had not been attended to. Mr Trotter said that the Union should take action in the matter, and moved that the secretary be instructed to write to the New Zealand Union referring to the delay and also pointing out the fact thaX Southland was being overlooked by the immigration authorities, as Bluff was not included among the ports allotted. The secretary (Mr A. L. Adamson) mentioned that for some considerable time the Chamber of Commerce and other bodies had tried to get the matter remedied, but without success. Mr Trotter’s motion was carried. The Clerk of the Southland County Council wrote advising the Union that the Council intended to take immediate action in regard to gorse hedges on road lines.— Received. Mr Giller said that seeing the farmers of Southland were going to be taxed heavily for their motor-cars, they should have some protection from wandering stock. The cattle were becoming an absolute menace on the country roads, especially on Sundays, and the attention of Riding members should be drawn to the risks motorists were forced to take on the roads. The Chairman also stated that cattle appeared to be allowed to roam on the roads without restraint. 'The Riverton road was particularly bad, and on his last trip in from Riverton he had passed three droves Of cattle on the road. It was decided that the Union ask the Riding members to instruct their inspectors to keep a more vigilant eye on wandering cattle. A vote of thanks to the chair concluded the meeting.
