TAEATU FATALITY
SURVIVOR QUITE RECOVERED, A large number of men were engaged on Saturday in clearing away the debris from the shaft of the Taratu mine in which James McGowan and David Jordan were suddenly overwhelmed by a fall of gravel and timber on Thursday afternoon. Jordan was recovered on Friday unhurt, but McGowan was found to be dead. Mr G. Cheeseman, manager of the Taratu Coal Company, states that the survivor, David Jordan, told him on Friday that the air in the portion of the mine in which he was imprisoned was quite good owing to the fact that there was a broken water pipe in the shaft, which connected with the surface. Mr Jordan even attempted to smoke, but found it a little difficult, as the smoke had little chance of escaping. Mr Jordan is a returned soldier, and it is understood that he had been gassed slightly at the front. Inquiries from Kaitangata elicited the fact that the survivor is still in the Kaitangata Hospital, but that he has quite recovered from his nerve-racking ex nerience.
