Among the visitors at present spending the holidays at Stewart Island are Messrs A. W. Morgan and T. D. Pearce, of Invercargill.
Messrs A. le H. Hoyles and J. E. Taylor, who have been visiting Stewart Island for their holidays, returned to Invercargill on Saturday.
An Auckland telegram states that Mr R. A. L. Firran, of Sydney, Inspector of the Colonial Sugar Company, died suddenly at Fiji during a tour of the Islands. A London cablegram reports that Colonel Unwin, delegate of the Salvation Army, is proceeding to Australia to promote boy immigration.
Advice is to *hand that the following Southlanders have been successful in the University entrance Examinations:—Junior Scholarship: J. B. Thorp 1,724, J. T. Campbell 1,647. Credit Passes: J. D. Rout 1,568, Annie M. Calder. Qualified for matriculation: H. B. Macdonald. Private advice has been received in Auckland by Mr Robert Millar, agent for the Tongan Government, of the death of the Rev J. B. Watkin, a veteran missionary of the Pacific, and late President of the Free Church of Tonga, aged about 95
Mr G. D. Campbell of the Bank of New South Wales, leaves this morning for Wellington to take up bis new duties in the office of the Bank’s Inspector. Prior to his departure, he was met by his fellow officers and presented with tokens of parting esteem in the form of an ebony walking stick and a case of Loewe pipes. Mr Campbell carries with him the best wishes of his many friends for a continuation of the success he has already attained in the Bank’s service.
