TO SAVE ST. PAUL’S
COMPREHENSIVE COMMITTEE FORMED. (Reuter’s Telegrams.) LONDON, January 22. A sum of £5OOO was voted by the Court of Common Council of the City of London for St. Paul’s Preservation Fund. This is additional ro £4OOO already contributed. The Chief Commoner in proposing the resolution, said it was incumbent on the corporation to give a lead to the movement to restore the monument, which should bear not merely on Londoners, but on the Empire and the world, as an incentive to people throughout the Empire A special committee was appointed to confer with everyone’concerned. including the Dean and Chapter of St. Paul’s. Councillor Pakeman said drastic measures must be taken, even to the extent of closing the edifice for a considerable period. He hoped the committee would approach the Government besides the Cathedral authorities. It was noteworthy that the public previously had subscribed £144,000 for St. Paul’s Preservation Fund through the columns of The Times.
