GENERAL NEWS JOTTINGS. BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From our Correspondent). A special meeting of the Riverton Bori ough Council was held on Monday evening, • when there were present:—Councillors Patrick (Deputy-Mayor), J. A. Martin, Hunt, A. E. Willett, G. Kerse and H. J Johnstone. j It was decided to hold Wednesday as the ; hail holiday. j The dog tax was fixed at 10/- per dog. SAWMILLING INDUSTRY. i After the holidays the sawmills have rej sumed operations. Orders arc coming in ! freely, and there is every likelihood that : the employees will be kept busy for some f time. Several big trains have passed . through during the week, heavily laden with the products of the forests. HOTEL PROPERTIES. The A'parima Hotel, ons of the oldest ■ hosteiries in the district, has again changed hands, the new proprietor being Mr But- • ler, of Winton. The Carriers’ Arms Hotel . will also be under new management this I week. The new proprietor of the Aparima ! intends to have several much-needed . imi provements effected, and, when completed, ! the hotel will be quite up-to-date. PROGRESSIVE LEAGUE. ■ The next meetings of the Progressive : League is called for this evening, and as ■ there are some important matters to be considered, it is to be hoped that a good ■ attendance of members will be present. VACANCY ON COUNTY COUNCIL. • Councillor Crawford, who has been rei presenting Pourakino Riding on the Wallace : County Council for some time, tendered his : resignation as last meeting owing to his re- ' moval to another district. Mr W. Hop- ' croft, Gummies Bush, has been asked to • contest the vacancy, and, should he do so, will receive strong support. It is rumoured ' that there will be other Richmonds in the . field, but so far they have not been definitely announced. FISHING IN THE SOUNDS. The launch Wairuna returned from the West Coast during the week. Mr Norman Beer reports that the launch party met with windy weather, and returned with a poor catch of fish. Mr Beer took some ' machinery for Mr Murrell, of Manapouri, • who is having a busy time with the tourists. FIRES IN THE LONGWOODS. The windy weather experienced on Wednesday fanned up slumbering fires in the Longwoods, and during the afternoon the town was enveloped in smoke. The dwellers in the bush must have had a very disagreeable time, and it is only those who have experienced a bush ftre can understand the dangers attached to it. So far no serious damage is reported. MOTOR ACCIDENTS. Trees are an ornament to a tovu, Out when they are likely to cause trouble they should be removed. On Sunday, just over the bridge, a serious accident was narrowly averted through two cars coming together, neither driver being able to see the other approaching on account of the trees. The Borough Council, if they do not care to remove them, should have them cut level i with the fence. Every precaution should I be taken to guard against accidents, which ! are happening with undesirable regularity.
