Mr Albert A. Newton, of Wellington, has been appointed superintendent of the Colonial Mutud Life Assurance Society for the Otago and Southland districts.

Mr John E. Winsloe returned to Gore this week from the United States of America. He is at present at Waikaka on short holiday leave, and comes to Invercargill on Saturday.

Sir Robert Stout (chairman), Sir George Fenwick, Messrs W. Reece, C. B. Jordan, and D. G. Cooper, members of the Prison's Board, are at present visiting Invercargill.

After a holiday trip to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Ballarat and Geelong, Mr E. Anscombe, of Dunedin, who arrived at Bluff by the steamer Manuka, on Wednesday evening, left Invercargill yesterday for his home town.

Advice has been received in Invercargill that Mr L. C. Webb has passed the first portion of the examination for the Diploma of Journalism; that Mr Hugh L. McKinnon has passed the first section of the BA. and Mr Hector I MacPherson, the final for the B.A.

A requiem Mass was held at the Basilica (South Dunedin) at 9 a.m. on Wednseday for the repose of the soul of the late Father Francis Joseph Marlow, who lost his life in a motor accident last Saturday night near Invercargill. Bishop Whyte celebrated the pontifical high Mass. Father Buckley was master of ceremonies, Father M'Mullan was assistant priest, Father Stanley Marlow was deacon, Father Spillane sub-deacon, and Fathers O’Dea and Lynch deacons at the throne. At the close of the service Father Collins preached the panegyric. The majority of the priests of the diocese were present. The funeral cortege left the church shortly after 10 a.m. for the Anderson’s Bay Cemetery, and was largely attended. Bishop Whyte officiated, at the graveside. The members of St. Joseph’s and St. Patrick’s branches of the Hibernian Society attended in regalia, and formed a guard of honour at the Basilica and at the graveside. The Auckland Hibernian Society was represented by Bro. W. Simpson, St Joseph’s branch, No. 73. Dunedin; St. Mary’s branch, No. 610 (Mosgiel), was represented by Past-president J. Walls; St. Aloysius’s branch, N 0399 (Wellington), was represented by Bro W. Darrock; and St. Patrick’s College (Wellington, was represented by Bro F. A. Phillips.
