CHURCH OF CHRIST

WELCOME SOCIAL. Tbe Church of Christ, Teviot street, was comfortably filled when the congregation and friends met for the purpose of welcoming Mr Allen Brooke, of Melbourne, who has accepted an engagement with the local congregation as its minister. A number of representatives of other churches were present, and the Church Secretary, Mr T. Pryde, presided over the gathering, and briefly introduced Mr and Mrs Brooke to the meeting. The following speakers also in a sympathetic manner extended a warm welcome on behalf of the organisations they represented:—Rev. J. L. Robinson (First Church), Rev. E. Gardiner (St. Andrews), Rev. J. H. Haslam (Elies Road Methodist), Rev. J. Carlisle (Baptist), Mr J. S. Baxter (Temperance Organisations), and Mr Topping (Orange Lodge). Mr Brooke feelingly replied, and thanked everyone for the evidently sincere and kind welcome extended to Mrs Brooke and him-. self, and outlined his ideals as a minister of the Gospel. The choir, under the leadership of Mr L. Holmes, gave an anthem, and the following musical items were rendered in a pleasing manner: Instrumental, Miss Eadie and Messrs J. Wood and Ramsay Howie; vocal, Mr and Mrs E. Holmes, Mrs Pryde, L. Holmes and Miss Pryde. The ladies of the congregation supplied a bountiful supper, and a very enjoyable gathering was concluded by the pronouncing of the Benediction by Mr Brooke.
