SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODRED. Gore Trotting Chib meeting to-day—-fin* race noon. DJ.C. Summer meeting begins to-day—-fiwt race 12.15 pan. ' Auckland Cup, £3OOO (two miles) will be decided this afternoon. Ashburton Trotting Club meeting to-day —first race at 11.35 a.m. Listening Post may race at Dunedin J.C. meeting on Saturday. Auckland Summer meeting will be continued on Tuesday, December 30. The Manawatu R.C.’s Summer meeting opens to-day and extends over 27 and 29. The Auckland T.C.’s meeting opens tomorrow, when Auckland Trotting Cup will be decided. The Australian Jockey Gubs Summer meeting will be concluded at Randwick this afternoon. The V.A.T.C. will race at Caulfield to-day, when the Hopetoun Cup, £l3OO (Im. 3f.) will be run. The Auckland Trotting Club’s Summer meeting will be continued on Monday and Wednesday next. It is stated that Oaknut would have won at Brighton if he had not broken down by the way. A Hendricksen may be racing Hustler at the Gore Trotting Club’s Annual meeting this afternoon. The speedy Gaillard is being specially reserved to take part in the Palmerston North Stakes to-morrow. Sir George Clifford’s Firestick was lame after working at Riccarton on Monday, hence she could not be taken to Wingatui. Orchid has been galloping well on the Wanganui tracks and is expected to pick up a race during the holidays. The Christmas Handicap (one mile) at Y- Auckland to-day is to afford a tryout to a number of Great Northern Derby horses. Duo has been galloping well on the tracks, hence his running in some of the minor races at Ellerslie will create keen interest. Wanganuites are going to put their trust in Dangle (7.6) in the Fitzherbert Handicap (6f.) at the Manawatu R.C. meeting to-day. It is reported that the Southland pacer, Royal Chance, was backed at New Brighton, but jigged on the mark and lost his chance. An Auckland telegram advises that Bevis was scratched for the Robinson Handicap at 9.30 on Wednesday morning, December 24. The Southland pacer Away has friends in Christchurch who expect him to race well on the second day of the Canterbury Park meeting. Ashley Reed will do the riding on Mr T. H. Lowry’s horses at the Auckland Racing Club’s Summer meeting when the weights are suitable for him. It is something like 20 years since an Auckland horse was successful in the Great Northern Derby. Town Bank may be the best of the Aucklanders this season. As Lucius has been racing well of late, it is interesting to learn that he will be ridden in the Auckland R.C. Railway Handicap by E. A. Keesing. After riding at Ellerslie to-day J. Barry will leave during the evening for the south to pilot Tamatete in the Palmerston North Stakes on Saturday. Provided she has not developed increased soreness Obligio will race in the Salisbury Handicap (Im.) at Wingatui to-day, but she may find Hungry Hill hard to beat. The six-year-old gelding Cold Steel, by Martian—Snowstell, has been purchased by J. Fryer, of Hawera, from the B. L. Joll Estate, and will race in his interests in the future. Kilmere, who will race as a novice during the holiday season in the North Island, is a three-year-old filly by Kilbroney and ranks as a half-sister to Little River. She is trained by Miss G. Maher, at Hastings. W. S. Bagby, whose term of suspension has expired, will be riding at Ellerslie today, his mounts including Spoony, Gold Acre and Ring the Bell. It has been noted that Ring the Bell is a very useful galloper. It is reported from the north that Songbird is a very unlikely starter in the home province during the holiday term. The Kilbroney horse has been very much off colour of late and it may be found very diffcult to wind him up to concert pitch in future. Private information received in New Plymouth early in the week concerning T. Tito was to the effect that he is still in a critical condition, and the doctors are afraid of meningitis setting in. The delay in the despatch of the special Wellington-Auckland horse train was all against Limelight, as it meant that the Solferino mare had not been galloped for five days when she reached Ellerslie and she requires solid work to prepare her for exacting handicap tasks. The train was held up by slips on the Main Trunk line. The latest news received from Ellerslie in regard to the Invercargill Auckland Cup representative, Gold Light, is to the effect that Mr W. T. Hazlett’s great mare has come through a searching preparation for her valuable engagement to-day. The daughter of Simper reached the scene of action early and has been galloping strongly ever since. It is pleasing to note that ex-New Zealander George Price is keeping his stable full in Sydney. He has just taken Stony up again after a spell and with th : s- addition to his team Price’s workers wall number eighteen. Mountain Song, the champion three-year-old filly of Queensland is the result of a bargain as far as her owners are concerned. The Messrs Hemming Bros, gave 30 guineas for the brood mare Sweet Chime, by Beragoon—Timbrel, who, though she had been mated with Quantock, was not believed to be in foal. This idea proved incorrect and she produced Mountain Song, who may be raced in Melbourne during the autumn months. In her most recent success she won the Stanley Plate, weight-for-age (Im.) in Imin 37jsecs and thus established a Queensland record. In Kentucky, in future, jockeys who appear at the race tracks the worse for liquor will have little opportunity of getting mounts. Despite Prohibition, some have been able to obtain too much drink, and in consequence, members of the Racing Commission have decided to take action. In a wire from Louisville to the Chicago paper, Collyer's Eye, it was stated that a track physician was to be appointed with special powers relating to the inspection of jockeys. Each day every jockey will be examined before he is allowed to accept mounts, and in the event of suffering from weak heart, disease, or other trouble, he will not be allowed to ride. Any rider found to have been drinking will be ordered off the ground. The wire went on to say that fully £lOO,OOO of public money had been lost this year on the

mounts of drunken jockeys, but because of the prominence of the owners for whom they rode, the stewards had hesitated to take action against the two principal offenders.

The Sydney writer, “Pilot,” is responsible for the following:—lt is cabled that because of the decision of the New Zealand Racing Conference judges in the Jones-McCarten appeal, Mr H. A. Knight, owner of Royal Despatch, will not race again this season. This is Mr Knight’s way of of emphasising his belief that Jones and McCarten have been unfairly treated. Well, Mr Knight’s decision will not help either Jones or McCarten in any way, and he races too few homes for his retirement of a few months to give New Zealand Clubs the slightest cause for concern. If Mr Knight had several good horses it would be different, but, as matters stand, his self-imposed martyrdom in the cause of his trainer and jockey will not be a great strain upon himself or New Zealand racing.

King’s Speech, the two-year-old who has been racing well in Auckland for J. T. Jamieson’s stable, cost 450 guineas as a yearling in Sydney. He is owned by Mr F. Earl and is by Demosthenes—Dragon Queen (imp.) by The Wag—Vina del Mar, by Americus (U.S.A.). With Automne out of the way at the Auckland fixture, owing to a cold, King’s Speech will have a good chance to distinguish himself.

Mr G. P. Mackay stated to a Sydney pressman that his great horse Beauford had just been put into work by S. Killick at Newcastle in preparation for racing in the autumn. After the gelding’s breakdown in the Hill Stakes in 1923 one attempt was made to train him, but his leg went again. Then he was fired and sent out to a paddock many months ago. The Newcastle veterinary surgeon, Mr R. V. Davis, who performed the operation, is sanguine that the brilliant son of Blueford will stand a preparation this time. Lovers of a great galloper will join in the hope that Beauford wall be thoroughly fit to measure strides again with the best in the land. If Gloaming is brought back to Australia in the autumn, as Mr Greenwood says he will be, and Beauford is in form, the pair will be able to settle the much-debated question of their relative galloping ability. They are, however, likely to find a young prince in the lists if Mr Corteen completes the sale of Heroic. Apart from Heroic there is the Night Patrol to be recokned with, as he proved in Melbourne during the spring that he is a great galloper up to a mile and a quarter. Beauford’s two-year-old brother, Glen Garry, has just been broken in by Killick, and is ready to go into work. Much interest will be taken in him. Blueford has thrown a rare succession of winners, and racing men will be anxious to see whether Beauford’s brother can go fast. HAWKE’S BAY JOCKEY CLUB. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY. TO-DAY’S REPRESENTATIVE MATCH. SOUTHLAND v. AUCKLAND. An event of more than ordinary interest in cricketing circles will be the representative match between the Auckland and Southland teams, which is to commence on the Show Grounds this morning. The visitors arrived by the express train from Dunedin last evening,»and were met at the railway station by the President (Mr F. Loughnan) and members of the Executive of the local Association and taken to the Southland Club Hotel, where they will be quartered during their stay in Invercargill. The honorary manager of the team is Mr E. C. Beale, who is well-known throughout the Dominion for the great interest he has always taken in furthering the interests of the game. The Auckland team to play to-day will be as follows:—L. G. Hemus (Captain), W. J. Coates, I. W. Cooper, G. L. Goodwin, A. H. Scott, A. J. Postles, E. W. Hughes, C. R. Jones, J. B. Simpson, V. C. Butler, and W. H. Johnston. The team is described as being a good all-round combination, and it is confidently anticipated that during the present tour it will give a good account of itself. At the conclusion of the Southland match, the visitors will play a series of matches with the other South Island Associations and return to Auckland about January 10. THE PLUNKET SHIELD. AUCKLAND v.
