FAREWELL AT WENDON

MR AND MRS ROBERTSON HONOURED. On Thursday evening, December 18, a very large and representative gathering assembled in the Wendon School to do honour to two of the oldest and most respected people in. the district in the persons of Mr and Mrs Alex. Robertson, who were leaving the district to spend a well-earned retirement at Gore. Mr McLay occupied the Chair, and the following programme was submitted:— Piano selection, Miss Cheyne; songs, Mrs McLay, Misses Barclay, Newell and Kennedy, and Messrs J. Moffitt and E. Korrell, gramophone selections, Mr Calder. The accompanists were Mrs W. Stevenson and Miss Cheyne. Mr McLay in a happy speech, referred to Mr Robertson’s long residence at Wendon over a period of 40 years. They were truly typical Scottish folk, ever homely and hospitable. Their absence would be keenly felt; but if was pleasing to note that they were doing just what other old settlers were doing—they were going to retire. Mr McLay on behalf of the district, then asked Mr and Mrs Robertson’s acceptance of two beautiful Morris chairs. “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows,” was then sung, and cheers were given. Other speakers were Rev. Keene and Mr H. Rowe, who spoke in glowing terms of the goodwill and esteem in which Mr and Mrs Robertson were held by everyone in the district. Mr J. Campbell, oh behalf of Mr and Mrs Robertson, in a few well-chosen words, returned thanks. Refreshments were then handed round, and some time was spent by the older residents recalling olden times. “Auld Lang Syne,” terminated a most enjoyable evening.
