ROYAL SHOW.

SOUTHLAND SUCCESSES. TWO CHAMPIONSHIPS SECURED. The entries for the first Royal Show held in New Zealand totalled 4413, the stock coming from all over the Dominion. In the light horse classes there are 272, draughts 100. The total sheep entries are 616, made up of 56 Lincolns, 167 Romneys, 18 English Leicesters, 29 Border 24 31 Rylands, 43 Corriedales, and 111 fat sheep and lambs. In cattle there are 562 entries, including 60 pure-bred Shorthorns, 46 Herefords, 55 Aberdeen-Angus, 38 milking Shorthorns, 30 Red Polls, 99 Friesians, 96 and 111 fat cattle. The Southland exhibits were owned by two well-known breeders, Messrs R. J. Anderson (Kauana) and G. P. Johnston (Waikaka Valley), and consisted of Border Leicesters. These breeders have built up a reputation which extends far beyond the limits of their home province, and by their successes at the Royal Show have further added to their laurels, bringing more honours to the Southland province. Mr Johnston gained the championship honours in the male class with a ram over 18 months and under 42 months, Mr Anderson filling the reserve postion with a ram hogget. The female championship was taken by Mr Anderson with his ewe hogget, an animal full of character, and carrying a fleece of even quality. For the Southland sheep to score so heavily in their class in spite of the long journey they had to make, proves that these two breeders have been working along the correct lines, and exercising great care in their breeding. After such a long journey it was only natural that the sheep would lose a little of their bloom, and this would have to be made up by breed character and constitution. To have swept the board in the Border Leicester class with so serious a handicap puts the Southlandbred sheep on a high pinnacle, and Messrs Anderson and Johnston have every reason to be proud of the positions won against such odds. They desene all the credit due to them for undertaking such a big task, and their enterprise will assist in bringing Southland more prominently before the breeders of the Dominion.
